Série 5 petrol and diesel: three N20 codes versus four N47/N57/B47 codes – a clear boundary between engine families

The engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point for any bare engine order on the Série 5. The catalogue covers two fuel families and several generations, from 2004 to 2023, with eight distinct codes that do not overlap. On the petrol side, three variants of the 2.0i 4-cylinder block coexist: N20B20A, N20B20B and N20B20D. These three codes refer to different evolutions of the same block but correspond to different configurations; they are not interchangeable without first verifying the exact code.

On the diesel side: four codes for three engine capacities, with clearly separated generations

The 2.0d covers two distinct codes: N47D20C and B47D20B. The N47 belongs to an earlier generation than the B47, which is the replacement block introduced by BMW. Confusing the two is a common mistake when relying solely on engine capacity. The N47D20D covers the 525d 2.0d variant, a specific engine that is not identical to the other 2.0d units despite sharing the same capacity. Finally, the 3.0d comes in two clearly separate generations: the M57D30 (306D3), a 6-cylinder in-line unit from the E60/E61 generation, and the N57D30A, its successor fitted to the F10/F11 generations. These two blocks have no mechanical interchangeability.

What the engine code does not always tell you

On the N47, a well-documented structural weakness in the timing chain on the flywheel side has led to numerous engine failures on the Série 5 E60/E61 and F10. It is precisely this issue that generates a significant proportion of bare engine enquiries for this unit. On the N20, timing chain problems are equally well known, though of a different nature. In all cases, the full code — not just the engine capacity or power output — remains the only valid identifier for determining which bare engine matches the vehicle in question.
