M57, N47, N57, B47, N20: five engine code families for the same 5 Series

On the BMW 5 Series from 2004 to 2023, the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable way to identify the exact part. Two vehicles listed with the same engine capacity and the same power output in the catalogue can carry entirely different blocks depending on their model year. The M57D30 (306D3) is fitted to the 3.0d in the E60/E61 generations (from 2004 onwards), while the N57D30A takes over on the F10/F11. On the 2.0d side, three variants of the N47 block coexist — N47D20C, N47D20D — to which the B47D20B is added on the later F10 and G30 series, the latter belonging to an entirely different architecture. The 525d 2.0d listing in the catalogue is a precise example of this: the same engine capacity as a 520d, but a different block.

Petrol 2.0i: three N20 variants that are not interchangeable

The 520i and 528i petrol models use the N20B20 family, available in N20B20A, N20B20B and N20B20D. The differences lie in the mapping and internal dimensions; an N20B20A cannot replace an N20B20D even if the physical fitment is identical. The N20 engines are well known for timing chain issues in the early years of production — a point worth checking before making any decision.

Diesel 3.0d: M57 and N57, two generations with nothing in common

The M57D30 (306D3) and the N57D30A share the same 3.0-litre displacement and an inline six-cylinder layout, but their internal architecture, mountings and ancillaries differ entirely. Swapping one for the other requires a complete adaptation of the engine environment. The blocks offered here are all bare engines: ancillaries, turbo, injection system and auxiliaries are not included and must be transferred from the old block or sourced separately.
