The Série 3 switched engine families twice between 1999 and 2011

Across the range covered by this collection, two major technical breaks shape the offer. On the diesel side, the M47 / M57 generation (cast-iron blocks, timing chain on the flywheel side) gave way to the N47 / N57 from the mid-2000s onwards: aluminium architecture, timing chain moved to the gearbox side — a well-documented weak point on the N47. On the petrol side, the M43 four-cylinder 1.9 l found in the early E46 bears no relation to the N-series that followed. Identifying the correct generation before ordering is therefore essential: the engine code stamped on the block takes precedence over any other information.

Diesel: three families — don't mix up the codes

The 2.0d covers three codes — M47D20_204D4, N47D20A and N47D20C — corresponding to distinct generations that are not mechanically interchangeable. The 3.0d comes in M57D30_306D2 (older generation) and N57D30A (new architecture). The 335d 3.0 Biturbo is based exclusively on the N57D30B, the turbocharged version of the N57 reserved for this high-performance variant: no other code applies to it within this range.

Petrol: from the M43 to the N-series — entirely different architectures

The 1.9i — code M43B19_194E1 — is the oldest engine in the collection, found on the early E46. The 1.6i encompasses two clearly distinct codes, N45B16A and N13B16A, which do not share the same internal design. The 2.5i carries a single code, N52B25A. The 2.0i covers three variants — N20B20A, N20B20B and N20B20D — derived from the same N20 block but differentiated by their internal specifications. Finally, the 3.0i is based on the N55B30A, a turbocharged 6-cylinder in-line engine. All engines in this collection are available as bare engines.
