BMW 3 Series Engine: before and after 2007, the diesel and petrol blocks have nothing in common

The 3 Series is first and foremost a long-distance saloon, regularly driven at sustained engine speeds over extended journeys. This usage profile accelerates wear on the engine blocks — particularly on the heavily heat-stressed diesel units — and makes bare engine replacement more common than on a vehicle used purely in town. Between 1999 and 2011, BMW made far-reaching changes to its engine architectures: identifying the correct block requires knowing the exact generation and the code stamped on the engine itself, not simply the engine capacity listed in the spec sheet.

Diesel: three generations of 2.0 and 3.0 blocks that are not interchangeable

On the 2.0 diesel, three codes exist: M47D20 (204D4), N47D20A and N47D20C. The M47, the block used in the E46/E90 generation, is mechanically unrelated to the N47 that replaced it. The N47 is well known for its timing chain issues at the rear of the block — a structural concern that is thoroughly documented for this engine family. The 318d/320d carries the specific code M47 D20 (204D1), which must not be confused with the 204D4. The 2.0d B47 (code B47D20B) belongs to a later generation and is incompatible with the two preceding units. On the 3.0 diesel, the M57D30 (306D2) and the N57D30A are two distinct blocks, whilst the N57D30B is fitted specifically to the 335d 3.0 Biturbo.

Petrol: from 1.6 to 2.5, engine families with nothing in common

The 1.6i covers two distinct, non-interchangeable codes: N13B16A and N45B16A. The 2.0i is covered by three variants of the N20 block: N20B20A, N20B20B and N20B20D. The 1.9i (code M43B19_194E1) and the 2.5i (code N52B25A) each correspond to a single block within this range. In every case, only the engine code stamped on the block — not the power output or the engine capacity — can confirm compatibility with the bare engine on offer.
