The 3 Series spanned three distinct engine families between 1999 and 2011

BMW 3 Series engines do not form a continuous lineage — they succeed one another through clear technological breaks. On the diesel side, the M47D20 (code 204D4) covers the early E46/E90 generations, subsequently replaced by the N47D20 (codes A and C), which introduces timing chain drive on the flywheel side — a well-documented source of premature wear on this engine. The 3.0 diesel follows the same logic: the M57D30 (306D2) gives way to the N57D30 (codes A and B, including the Biturbo 335d), a third-generation Common Rail injection architecture with no direct mechanical relationship to its predecessor.

Petrol: from the M43 to the N20, engines with nothing in common

On the petrol side, the gap between generations is even more pronounced. The M43B19 (194E1, 1.9i) is a cast-iron four-cylinder with twin camshafts, produced through the early part of the period. The N52B25A (2.5i) is a straight-six with an aluminium-magnesium block — a technology unique to BMW, with no connection to the four-cylinder engines of the same era. The 1.6i variants, meanwhile, are based on two different engines — N45B16A and N13B16A — which are not mechanically interchangeable despite sharing the same engine capacity. The N20B20 (2.0i, available in variants A, B and D) closes the period with direct Valvetronic injection and an integrated turbocharger.

Identifying the right engine: the engine code takes precedence over engine capacity

Across the full range, 14 distinct engine codes cover 8 engine variants. A single engine capacity — 2.0d or 2.0i, for example — can correspond to three different engines depending on the year of manufacture and the vehicle generation. Engine capacity alone is therefore not sufficient to identify the correct part. The engine code, stamped on the cylinder block, is the only valid starting point. Two supply options are available depending on the condition of your original unit: outright replacement or reconditioning of your own unit, the latter being the appropriate choice when the block has a localised fault rather than general wear.
