BMW X5 Turbo: how failure patterns changed before and after the switch to N-series engines

On the BMW X5, turbo problems differ markedly between the M57-engined generations and those fitted with N47, N55, N57 or N63 units. The M57 D30 engines (codes M57 D30, M57 D30 (306D2), M57306D3) are well known for progressive turbo bearing wear caused by engine oil degradation, compounded by the severe thermal cycling of a heavy SUV. The classic symptom is a whistling noise under acceleration accompanied by persistent blue smoke. On these 184, 211, 218 and 235 hp variants, the variable-geometry turbo is also prone to carbon build-up on its moving vanes — a structural weak point that produces an erratic engine response before any outright failure occurs.

With N-series engines, the failure modes are different. The N47D20D (X5 25d, 25xd) is particularly susceptible to air leaks on the intake circuit, which place abnormal stress on the CHRA. The N57D30 (xDrive40d 313 hp) uses a twin-turbo system whose two stages rarely age at the same rate: a failing stage often masks the true condition of the other. On the petrol side, the N63 B44 A (xDrive50i 4.4i) has two turbos arranged in an inverted-V layout — an architecture that concentrates heat and accelerates lubrication breakdown at hot idle. The N54B30A, N54B30B and N55B30A (xDrive35i 306 hp) engines share closely related but distinct references: the N54 is twin-turbo, while the N55 is a single variable-geometry turbo with an electronic wastegate — the two are not interchangeable.

Address the root cause before any replacement

Regardless of the generation, fitting a new turbo to an engine where the original cause of failure has not been identified and rectified — whether a blocked diesel particulate filter, overdue oil, a degraded head gasket, or an air leak — will invariably result in a repeat failure. This is the critical point common to every engine variant in this range.

Finding the right reference: the engine code is the only reliable guide

Several power outputs exist under the same commercial designation — the 3.0d is available in 184, 211, 218 and 235 hp depending on the generation and the exact engine code. The manufacturer references associated with each unit are numerous and have evolved through successive revisions (suffixes F, G, K, L, M09…). Only the engine code stamped on the block — not the stated power output or engine capacity — allows the correct turbo reference to be selected. All turbos offered in this range are new turbos, available for direct purchase, covering both diesel and petrol variants of the BMW X5.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your BMW X5 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my BMW X5 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
