Reliable on diesel, fragile on petrol: why the Série 1 turbo fails for different reasons

On the BMW Série 1, turbo failures follow two distinct patterns depending on the engine range. On the diesel side, the M47, N47 and B47 engines have a well-documented vulnerability to oil circuit contamination: carbon deposits in the feed passages, delayed lubrication on start-up, bearing wear and CHRA deterioration. The most common symptom is a characteristic whistling noise accompanied by a loss of power, sometimes followed by the vehicle entering limp mode. A blocked diesel particulate filter makes matters worse by generating back-pressure that damages the turbine-side seals. On the petrol side, the N13 and B48 engines are more prone to excessive oil consumption and air leaks on the intake hoses, which weaken the air-fuel mixture and place abnormal strain on the turbo. In both cases, replacing the turbo without addressing the root cause — oil quality and circuit condition, intake sealing, DPF condition — will lead to a rapid recurrence.

M47, N47, B47, N13, B48: five engine families, five distinct references

The range covers all diesel and petrol engines for the Série 1: 116d, 118d, 120d, 120i, 125i, 114i, 116i, 118i, in variants ranging from 116 hp to 224 hp. Seventeen engine codes are listed — from the older M47TU to the more recent B47D20A and B48B20 generations — and several variants exist for the same stated power output. A 120d 163 hp and a 120d 177 hp do not take the same turbo, just as an N47D20A and an N47D20C differ in their variable geometry and manufacturer references. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable starting point for identifying the exact reference; power output alone is not sufficient. All turbos listed here are new, sold with no old unit to return.
