Why the turbo on your BMW Série 1 N13B16 can fail
On BMW Série 1 models fitted with the N13B16 petrol engine (114i, 116i, 118i), the turbocharger operates in a demanding environment, building boost pressure from low revs. The turbocharger on this engine is a twin-scroll unit that delivers up to 0.7 bar of boost, placing considerable stress on the bearings and seals. Insufficient lubrication, incorrect oil grade or a poorly maintained service history are among the main causes of premature failure. A clogged air filter or a faulty mass airflow sensor can also disrupt the air/fuel mixture and accelerate turbine wear, as can a cracked vacuum hose or a split hose between the turbo and the airbox, which causes a loss of boost pressure.
Compatibility of the turbo for BMW Série 1 114i, 116i, 118i
This new turbo is compatible with reference 820021-5001S, intended for BMW Série 1 models with a 1.6 petrol engine, engine codes N13B16 and N13B16M0, with an engine capacity of 1598 cm³. This new turbo is sold on an exchange basis: in accordance with our Terms and Conditions, return of your old turbo is required, but it is only collected after the new unit has been delivered and fitted, so your BMW Série 1 is never left off the road unnecessarily. A 12-month parts warranty applies, subject to fitting by a qualified professional. Payment can be spread over multiple instalments, in up to 10 instalments.
Fitting advice for a long-lasting BMW Série 1 turbo
Before fitting, check the condition of the oil circuit, the boost hoses and the air intake, as any residual dirt or a leak can damage the new turbo within the first few revolutions. Prime the turbo with oil before the first start-up to ensure immediate lubrication of the bearings. Use an engine oil that meets BMW specifications and replace the air filter to protect the longevity of your new turbocharger.
