BMW Série 2 petrol or diesel turbo: the same symptoms, but different technologies?

The Série 2 splits into two distinct families. On the petrol side, the B48B20A, B48B20B, B48B20 and B46B20 engines (220i 184 hp, 230i 252 hp) use turbos with fixed geometry controlled by a wastegate: boost pressure is regulated mechanically via a bypass valve — a robust architecture, though sensitive to the high temperatures generated by these direct-injection units. On the diesel side, engine codes N47D20C, B47D20A, B47C20A and B47C20B (218d 136 hp, 218d 143 hp, 218d 150 hp, 220d) are fitted with turbos with variable geometry, whose movable vanes adjust the gas flow according to engine speed — a technology more susceptible to vane fouling and poor lubrication quality.

Identifying the correct turbo by engine code

Between the 218d 136 hp and 150 hp, or between the 220i 184 hp and 230i 252 hp, the engine code stamped on the face of the block is the only reliable criterion: at identical engine capacity, turbo references differ. The N47D20C and the B47D20A do not share the same CHRA despite both being badged as 2.0 diesel. On B47 diesels, several reference variants coexist — for example the 54409880024 / 54409880031 / 54409880038 family for certain 218d models — which makes it essential to check the full engine code before placing any order. All turbos listed on this page are brand-new turbos sold direct, with no old unit to return.

Common causes of failure on these engines

On B48 petrol units, degraded oil or an overdue service interval attacks the CHRA bearings first — blue smoke on acceleration and a dull rumble at mid-range revs are the most common signs. On N47 and B47 variable-geometry diesels, progressive fouling of the movable vanes — often linked to a blocked diesel particulate filter or a faulty EGR circuit — causes erratic turbo response followed by a drop in boost pressure. In both cases, addressing the root cause before replacing the turbo is essential: a new turbo fitted to a contaminated oil circuit or an unchecked intake will suffer the same failure.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your BMW Série 2 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my BMW Série 2 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
