Reconditioned Audi A3 2.0 TFSI Gearbox

From 2004 to 2013, the A3's 2.0 TFSI was fitted with three successive gearbox families that are not interchangeable between generations.

The four engine codes within this scope — AXX, BWA, CCZA and CCZB — cover two distinct periods. The AXX and BWA were fitted to the A3 8P produced from 2004; the CCZA and CCZB appeared from 2008 onwards, with power raised to 200 hp and a revised internal architecture. This model-year break changes the part you need to order: a gearbox set up for an AXX is not mechanically compatible with a CCZA, even where the ratios are identical.

6-speed manual, S tronic 6 or S tronic 7: three transmissions for one engine

The A3's 2.0 TFSI was paired with three different transmissions depending on the year and specification. The 6-speed manual is the most common on early models. The S tronic 6 wet dual-clutch covers a portion of the intermediate model years. The S tronic 7 dry dual-clutch appears on the CCZA and CCZB versions. These two S tronic units are entirely different mechanisms: they share neither the casing, nor the final drive ratio, nor the clutch plates. S tronic units are supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch assembly included.

Key points to watch with this engine

The S tronic 7 (DSG DQ200) fitted to the CCZA and CCZB is well known for juddering during slow urban driving — a symptom caused by wear of the dry clutches, not by the gearbox mechanism itself. The 6-speed manual paired with the AXX and BWA can sometimes exhibit difficulty selecting 3rd or 5th gear at high mileage, generally attributable to the selector forks and synchromesh rings. Identifying the engine code should always be the first step before placing any order: two A3 2.0 TFSI vehicles from the same year can carry different transmissions depending on the trim level or the market they were built for.
