Reconditioned Audi A3 2.0 TFSI Gearbox

A3 2.0 TFSI from 2004 to 2013: a performance-oriented compact whose demands in heavy urban and motorway use led to three distinct gearbox families

The A3 2.0 TFSI is no leisurely city car. Positioned above the 1.4 and 1.6, it attracts drivers who regularly exploit the available torque — pulling out of town, on fast roads, or during frequent bursts of acceleration. It is precisely this kind of use that places different demands on the transmission depending on the generation: three families coexist on this engine — 6-speed manual, DSG 6 and DSG 7 — and the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable way to know which one your vehicle has.

Either side of the generation changeover: AXX and BWA, then CCZA and CCZB

The codes AXX and BWA cover the first period (from 2004 onwards), where the wet-clutch DSG 6 is the reference automatic transmission. The codes CCZA and CCZB appear later and may be paired with the dry-clutch DSG 7. The 6-speed manual is available throughout the entire range, but it is not interchangeable with the automated gearboxes: the mechanical interfaces and shaft lengths differ.

DSG 6 and DSG 7: two architectures with different weak points

The DSG 6 (wet clutches) handles high torque and repeated spirited driving better; it has a reputation for robustness under sustained use. The dry-clutch DSG 7, introduced on the later engine codes, is known for juddering during low-speed manoeuvres and erratic behaviour from cold — particularly noticeable in stop-and-go urban driving. Both gearboxes are sold with a new dual-clutch assembly, mechatronic unit not included: this point should be factored in during diagnosis before replacement. Both available sales options — exchange and customer unit rebuild — apply to all gearbox families on this engine.
