A3 1.6 TDI from 2009 to 2020: before or after the engine code changeover, the associated gearbox is not the same

The A3's 1.6 TDI spans eleven years of production and three distinct engine codes — CAYC, CLHA and CRKB — which do not all correspond to the same transmission families. Depending on the year and the code stamped on the block, the gearbox may be a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual or a DSG 7. This variety makes identification essential before taking any steps: a gearbox from the CAYC range cannot be substituted for one from a CRKB, even if the engine capacity and fuel type are identical.

When rebuilding the customer's own gearbox is the right solution

Two sales methods are available for this range. In most cases, an exchange unit is sufficient. However, rebuilding the customer's own unit makes perfect sense when the gearbox in question is difficult to source on an exchange basis — which can happen with certain DSG 7 configurations fitted to this diesel block — or when the customer wishes to have their own unit reconditioned, particularly for vehicles with a known history whose casing or mountings have characteristics specific to the year of production.

Key points regarding the DSG 7 in diesel

The dry-clutch DSG 7 fitted to the 1.6 TDI is known for juddering during slow urban driving, a symptom often linked to dual-clutch wear. The reconditioned gearbox is supplied with a new dual-clutch, without mechatronic unit: this is a structural point that must be taken into account when placing an order. For manual gearboxes, the most common symptoms on this drivetrain remain difficulty selecting 3rd or 5th gear at high mileage, characteristic of synchroniser wear on these transmissions.
