Twisty-road driving, repeated hard acceleration, sustained high revs out of corners: an Audi TT is structurally harder on the transmission than an ordinary passenger car. On DSG versions, this results in accelerated clutch wear and, on the S tronic 6 (DQ250), in characteristic juddering at low speed caused by the mechatronic unit. On manual versions, it is the 2nd- or 3rd-gear synchromesh that gives way first on high-torque engines. These symptoms point directly to the type of gearbox to be replaced, depending on the engine.

Manuals and DSG: which gearbox fits which engine

The 2.0 TDI (engine code CBBB) is paired exclusively with a 6-speed manual. The 1.8 TFSI (engine code CDAA) can take either a 5-speed or a 6-speed manual depending on the year and specification — confusion between the two is common and leads to ordering the wrong reference. The 2.0 TFSI (engine codes BWA, CCZA, CESA) is fitted exclusively with DSG gearboxes: an S tronic 6 on earlier models and an S tronic 7 (DQ500) on later versions — the first registration date is essential here to determine which applies. The 3.2 VR6 (engine codes BHE, BUB) is available with both transmissions: 6-speed manual or DSG 6. The 2.5 TFSI (engine codes CEPA, CEPB, DAZA, DNWA) and the 3.2 TFSI (engine codes BHE, BUB) are fitted exclusively with DSG 7 and DSG 6 respectively.

DSG supplied without mechatronic unit: an important technical point to know before ordering

The DSG gearboxes listed here are supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch assembly included. If the diagnosis has identified the mechatronic unit as the only faulty component, a complete gearbox is not the right solution. However, if both the mechatronic unit and the gearbox are beyond use — which is frequently the case on high-mileage S tronic 6 units — replacing the whole assembly remains the most sensible course of action. For manual gearboxes, two options are available: exchange or rebuilding your own unit — the choice depends on the condition of the original part and the turnaround time you can accept.
