Reconditioned Audi TT Gearbox

The Audi TT is a sports coupé: its gearbox is not subject to the same stresses as a family saloon

Designed for performance-oriented use, the Audi TT places repeated high-revving demands on its transmission, with sharp gear changes and, on quattro versions, permanent torque distribution to all four wheels. Unlike a city car or urban SUV whose gearbox mainly absorbs stop-and-go cycles, the TT's gearbox is far more exposed to heat and synchromesh wear, particularly on the more powerful engines. This is precisely why accurate identification of the correct part is essential before any replacement is carried out.

Six engines, four gearbox families: the combinations you need to know

The TT range covers the period 2003 à 2022 and six distinct engines. The 1.8 TFSI (engine codes BHE, CDAA, CCZA) is fitted, depending on the generation, with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed manual — these two gearboxes are not interchangeable. The 2.0 TDI (engine code CBBB) is exclusively paired with a 6-speed manual. The 3.2 naturally aspirated (engine code BUB) is available with either a 6-speed manual or an S tronic 6, depending on the variant. The 2.0 TFSI (engine codes BWA, CESA, CEPA, CEPB, DAZA, DNWA) is fitted with either the S tronic 6 or the S tronic 7 depending on the year and power output; these two dual-clutch gearboxes have different architectures and are not interchangeable. The 2.5 TFSI and the 3.2 TFSI are each paired with a specific S tronic. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable way to determine which reference — such as FMN, DQB, RGC or LTL — actually corresponds to the vehicle.

S tronic and manual: two different replacement approaches

The S tronic 6 and S tronic 7 are dual-clutch gearboxes: they are supplied with a new dual-clutch assembly, without a mechatronic unit. Manual gearboxes (5- or 6-speed) contain no onboard electronics. Within this scope, two options are available: supply of a reconditioned unit on an exchange basis (the old unit must be returned), or rebuilding of the customer's own unit, which is then returned to them — a worthwhile option when the gearbox has a particular history or configuration.
