Robust manual, fragile S tronic: the TT 3.2 VR6 doesn't wear out its gearboxes in the same way

On the TT 3.2 (engine codes BHE and BUB, 2003–2010), it is the S tronic 6 that accounts for the most common failures. This first-generation dual-clutch gearbox suffers from premature wear of the mechatronic unit and control issues at low speeds: juddering during manoeuvres, hesitation on cold starts, and harsh gear changes between 1st and 2nd. The result is that, on a vehicle of this power output, the effective service life of the gearbox is often well below that of the engine itself.

What this means for choosing the right part

The two engine codes BHE and BUB do not take exactly the same gearbox references: before doing anything else, the code stamped on the gearbox itself remains the definitive identification point, as the year alone is not enough to distinguish between variants. The gearbox references available on this page (families JYV, JPZ, JLV, HXZ, GYC, GUM) cover both transmissions offered with this engine: the 6-speed manual, which has a considerably stronger reputation for durability on this unit, and the S tronic 6, sold without the mechatronic unit but with a new dual-clutch assembly — an important structural point if the original mechatronic unit is the cause of the fault.
