TT 3.2: a robust manual gearbox, a DSG 6 known for juddering

On the 3.2 V6 (engine codes BHE and BUB, 2003–2010), two transmissions are available depending on the version: a 6-speed manual and a wet-clutch DSG 6. The DSG 6 of this generation is well known for juddering on cold starts, vibrations during low-speed manoeuvres and harsh gear changes in urban driving — symptoms that worsen progressively and indicate advanced wear of the dual-clutch or a failing mechatronic unit. When the manual gearbox is at fault, it is most often the primary shaft bearing or the upper-ratio synchromesh rings that give way first.

Manual or DSG 6: two different replacement approaches

The 6-speed manual gearbox for the 3.2 is a relatively straightforward unit to replace: identification is based on the engine code and the year. The DSG 6, on the other hand, is supplied without the mechatronic unit — the control electronics are often not at fault or can be dealt with separately — but with a new dual-clutch included. This is an important point to check before ordering: a DSG 6 supplied without a new clutch will not resolve the cold judder symptoms caused by worn clutch plates.
