A4 2.0 TDI, 1.9 TDI, 3.0 TDI… why can the same engine require a different gearbox depending on the year?

On the A4, engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the right part. A concrete example: the 2.0 TDI covers 12 distinct engine codes — from BLB to CJCB — and each one may correspond to a different gearbox reference. The same applies to the 2.5 TDI: seven codes (AFB, AKN, BAU, BCZ, BDG, BDH, BFC) cover variants that do not all share the same 6-speed manual gearbox. The year of manufacture and the engine code, stamped on the block, are therefore the two essential pieces of information before placing any order.

5-speed or 6-speed manual: what the engine determines

The collection covers the A4 from 1997 to 2015, in both diesel and petrol. Only two engines are fitted with a 5-speed manual gearbox: the 1.9 TDI (codes AFN, AVB, AVF, AVG, AWX, BKE, BRB) and the 2.4 V6 (code BDV). All others — 2.0 TDI, 2.5 TDI, 2.7 TDI, 3.0 TDI, 3.2 and 1.4 TFSI — are fitted with a 6-speed manual. Confusing the number of gears is one of the most common mistakes on this model, particularly when comparing two generations of the 2.0 TDI.

Less common engines: points to watch

The 3.2 petrol (codes AUK, BKH, CALA), the 3.0 TDI (BKN, CAPA, CCWA) and the 2.7 TDI (BPP, BSG, CAMA, CGKA) each have two references available. The 2.4 V6 (BDV) and the 1.4 TFSI (CVNA) have only one reference each. For these engines, checking the engine code is all the more critical: any identification error directly reduces the options available. Two reconditioning methods are offered depending on the reference: exchange or rebuild of the customer's own unit.
