Why can the same 2.5 TDI engine in the A4 require a different gearbox depending on the engine code?

The A4 spans the years 1997 to 2015 and seven distinct engine variants, each with its own gearbox references. The most common source of confusion involves engines that share the same capacity but diverge as soon as you look at the engine code. On the 2.5 TDI alone, for example, seven codes coexist — AFB, AKN, BAU, BCZ, BDG, BDH, BFC — and they do not all correspond to the same 6-speed manual gearbox reference. Reading only "2.5 TDI" on the registration document is not enough: it is the code stamped on the block that allows you to identify the correct reference.

Diesel or petrol, 5 or 6 speeds: what the engine list reveals

Of the seven engines covered here, only one is fitted with a 5-speed manual gearbox: the 1.9 TDI (codes AFN, AVB, AVF, AVG, AWX, BKE, BRB). All the others — 2.0 TDI, 3.0 TDI, 2.5 TDI, 2.7 TDI, 3.2 and 1.4 TFSI — take a 6-speed manual. This is an important point when diagnosing a vehicle: a manual A4 1.9 TDI cannot accept the gearbox from a 2.0 TDI, even though the two engines appear close in capacity.

In terms of volume, the 2.0 TDI alone accounts for twelve engine codes (BLB, BRD, BRE, BVG, CAGA, CAGB, CAGC, CAHA, CAHB, CGLC, CJCA, CJCB), making it the most varied engine in the A4 catalogue in terms of gearbox references. At the other end of the scale, the 1.4 TFSI (code CVNA) and the 2.7 TDI (codes BPP, BSG, CAMA, CGKA) each correspond to a single gearbox type with a more limited range of codes.

Two reconditioning methods depending on the available unit

For the most common engines such as the 2.0 TDI or the 1.9 TDI, the gearbox can be supplied on an exchange basis or rebuilt from the vehicle's original unit — two distinct processes that do not follow the same logistical flow. For less widespread engines (3.0 TDI with codes BKN, CAPA, CCWA; 3.2 with AUK, BKH, CALA), availability depends directly on the engine code: it is worth checking this before placing any order.
