On this engine, the transmission is invariably a 5-speed manual — no automatic or automated manual variant is covered here. What differs from one vehicle to another is the engine code stamped on the block: AFN, AVG, AVB, AVF, AWX, BKE and BRB span two generations of the 1.9 TDI on the A4, with mechanical differences that determine the exact compatible gearbox reference.
