S3: three gearbox families for two petrol engines, from 2006 to 2020

The Audi S3 has always been offered exclusively with petrol engines — 1.8 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI — but the transmission comes in three distinct families: the 6-speed manual, the S tronic 6, and the S tronic 7. These three types are not interchangeable between generations, and choosing the correct unit depends as much on the model year as on the engine code stamped on the block.

6-speed manual, S tronic 6, S tronic 7: what each type means

The 6-speed manual is fitted to the earliest generations of the S3, including the rare 1.8 TFSI variants (engine code CDLA, CDLB). It remains the only transmission available for this engine in our catalogue. The S tronic 6 is a wet dual-clutch gearbox that appears on the 2.0 TFSI of the intermediate generations (engine codes CJSA, CJSB); it is known for juddering in slow urban driving and for mechatronic unit issues — this component is sold separately and is not included with the reconditioned gearbox. The S tronic 7 (dry dual-clutch gearbox) is fitted to the most recent versions of the 2.0 TFSI (engine code CJXC); its dual-clutch assembly is supplied new with the unit. Both S tronic gearboxes share the dual-clutch principle but have no parts in common: checking the engine code and production date is essential before placing any order.

1.8 TFSI or 2.0 TFSI: the identification that determines everything

The 1.8 TFSI accounts for a small proportion of the range (engine codes CDLA and CDLB) and is only available with the 6-speed manual. The 2.0 TFSI covers the vast majority of variants, spanning all three gearbox families depending on the generation and engine code. For a 2.0 TFSI produced between the first years of sale and 2020, the factory-fitted transmission could be any one of the three families: only the engine code combined with the production date can determine this without ambiguity.
