3 gearbox types for the Audi S3: DSG 6, DSG 7 and 6-speed manual, depending on the engine and generation

The Audi S3 produced between 2006 and 2020 never came with just one transmission: depending on the generation and engine, it was fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox, a DSG 6 or a DSG 7. These three families are not mechanically interchangeable, and the choice of replacement unit depends directly on what was fitted as standard to the vehicle.

1.8 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI: a gearbox split that does not overlap

The 1.8 TFSI (codes CJSA, CJSB) is paired exclusively with the 6-speed manual. The 2.0 TFSI (codes CDLA, CDLB, CJXC) covers all three types: it received the DSG 6 on early versions, the DSG 7 on later generations, and the 6-speed manual depending on the market and model year. The same 2.0 TFSI can therefore correspond to radically different gearboxes: the engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point for identifying the correct family.

What each gearbox type means in practice

The 6-speed manual is the simplest gearbox to identify and replace, with no onboard electronics within the gearbox itself. The DSG 6 is a wet dual-clutch gearbox; the DSG 7 operates with a dry dual clutch. Both DSG versions are sold without the mechatronic unit but include a new dual clutch: the mechatronic unit, a separate electrohydraulic component, is dealt with through a separate process. Two purchasing options are available in this collection: exchange and customer unit rebuild, the latter allowing you to keep your own reconditioned gearbox.
