When to choose an exchange unit, and when to have your own unit rebuilt

The engines in this range are available on an exchange basis only: you receive a reconditioned block and return your old engine. This arrangement suits the majority of cases, particularly when the original engine is too badly damaged to be salvaged, or when the vehicle needs to be back on the road quickly. Having your own unit rebuilt, on the other hand, makes more sense when the block shows localised wear with no major structural damage, or when it is a low-mileage engine whose history you wish to preserve. This option is not available in this range: only exchange units are offered here, which effectively determines your choice from the moment you place your order.

Key points to note by engine type

The 2.0 TDI (four references in the range) is the most widely fitted engine on the A5; its power variants mean different engine codes apply, and particular attention should be paid to the 2007–2012 period during which Audi revised the timing system. The 2.0 TFSI (three references, including codes CAEB, CDNC and CMGA) is known for oil consumption issues linked to the piston rings in the earlier years; confirming the exact generation of the block avoids mismatches. The 1.8 TFSI (two references, CABB and CGLB) shares a similar architecture with the 2.0 TFSI but has its own bore dimensions and internal components: despite their common lineage, the two families are not interchangeable.
