On the 2.0 TDI A4, variable geometry is the turbo's first failure point

The variable-geometry turbos fitted to the 2.0 TDI A4 share a well-documented weakness: the gradual fouling of the turbine vanes. Soot, degraded oil residue, deposits caused by a blocked DPF or excessive EGR recirculation eventually seize the blades. The result: the turbo can no longer regulate its boost pressure, power drops sharply and the engine goes into rev limiting. This symptom is often mistaken for an electronic fault or a faulty sensor, which delays diagnosis. The other common cause on these units is lubrication failure: worn turbo seals, oil left in service too long, or a partially blocked oil return circuit lead to bearing wear, excessive axial play and, ultimately, the characteristic blue smoke when the engine is hot.

The 2.0 TDI designation covers a power range on the A4 running from 120 to 204 hp depending on the generation, with a large number of engine codes: BLB, BNA, BRE, BRF, BVF, BVG for the earliest versions; CAGA, CAGB, CAGC, CJCA, CJCB, CJCC, CJCD, CMFA, CMFB, CGLE for the mid-range generations; CNHA, CNHC, CZJA, DDDA, DESA, DETA, DETB, DFHA, DFBA, DTP, DTPA for the more recent versions, including the 190 hp and 204 hp mild hybrid. The same power output can correspond to different turbo references depending on the exact engine code: checking the code stamped on the block before placing any order is essential. Before fitting a new turbo, the root cause of the problem — fouling, oil quality, EGR circuit or DPF — must be addressed first, otherwise the new part will be destroyed under the same conditions.
