Exchange suits the most common engines, which are well represented in the vehicle parc: 2.0 TDI, 1.4 TSI, 1.9 TDI, 1.6 TDI, 2.0 TSI. Rebuilding your own unit becomes the better option when the engine is rare, hard to source on an exchange basis, or when its known history makes it worth starting from the vehicle's original part — a common scenario with niche engines such as the 2.4 TDI found in the LT, the 3.0 TDI in the Touareg, or certain older versions of the Transporter.

Identification: the engine code takes priority over engine capacity

A recurring mistake with Volkswagen engines is to rely solely on engine capacity. The same 2.0 TDI can correspond to very different units depending on the generation and power output: CFCA, CDCA, CDAA, CAAC are all 2.0 TDI units, but they are not interchangeable. The same logic applies to petrol engines: BLG, CAVE, CAXA, CJZA are all 1.4 TSI units with different architectures and specifications. The engine code, stamped on the block, is the only reliable reference — it determines compatibility before anything else.

Key points to watch by engine family

The chain-driven 1.4 TSI units (CAVE, CAVA, CUNA families) are known for premature timing issues and oil consumption on early versions. The EA189-generation 2.0 TDI engines (BLS, BKC, CDLG…) have accumulated high mileages in the light commercial vehicle parc — Transporter, Crafter, Caddy — making it all the more critical to verify the engine code before ordering. On the naturally aspirated petrol side, the older-generation 1.6 and 1.2 blocks (AHF, ABL, AXB, AXG) relate to models often produced before 2005; exchange availability is more limited for these, which naturally points towards rebuilding the original unit. In all cases, the engine is supplied as a bare engine, without ancillaries.
