Mercedes C-Class Diesel Engine: 5 Engine Codes Across Three Families, 2008 to 2018

On this generation of the C-Class, the diesel units have well-documented weaknesses that are essential to understand before any replacement. The OM651 (family of codes 651911, 651913, 651921) is known for head gasket failures and cracks in the cooling circuit, made worse by repeated overheating. The result is typically a gradual loss of power, unexplained coolant consumption, or persistent white smoke on start-up. The OM611 (code OM611.960, 2.2 CDI) is an older generation that suffers more from piston ring wear and blocked oil galleries, leading to high oil consumption or tappet noise when cold. The 1.6 CDI (code 626951), a more recent unit, has known weaknesses in the oil pump and variable-flow turbo, with symptoms including insufficient oil pressure or unexpected limp-home activation.

Identifying the correct engine code before ordering

The same 2.1 CDI engine capacity covers three distinct codes — 651911, 651913 and 651921 — which are not interchangeable. These variants correspond to different emission standards, power outputs and production years within the same C-Class (2008–2018). The engine code is stamped on the block and appears on the vehicle registration document under section P5: it is the only reliable reference to avoid ordering the wrong part.

Bare engine: what is and is not included

All engines listed here are bare engines: the block, cylinder head and reconditioned internal components, without ancillaries (turbo, alternator, starter motor, injection pump, timing belt). Transferring these components from the old block is an integral part of the fitting process and must be planned for in advance. Two sales methods are available depending on the reference: standard exchange and rebuild to 0 km — availability varies according to the engine code in question.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a engine for this Mercedes model in stock?

We currently list 5 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Mercedes?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right engine for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old engine (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the engine for my Mercedes?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
