From Z17DT to the A17 codes: why the turbo on the Opel 1.7 CDTI is not the same from one generation to the next?

The answer lies in the succession of engine code families: the codes Z17DT and Z17DTH correspond to variants in the 100–101 hp range, whilst the codes A17DTJ, A17DTR, A17DTS, A17DTC, A17DTE, A17DTF, A17DTL and A17DTN mark a later generation covering a spectrum from the 1.7 CDTI ecoFLEX through to the 1.7 CDTI 130. This switch from the Z prefix to the A prefix is the first thing to check before searching for any reference.

One 1.7 CDTI, multiple power outputs and just as many distinct references

On the Opel Astra, Corsa, Meriva and Zafira fitted with this engine, the stated power output — 100, 101, 110, 125 or 130 hp — is not on its own enough to identify the correct turbo reference. For the 110 and 125 hp variants, the codes Z17DTJ, Z17DTR, A17DTJ and A17DTR coexist, and each can point to a different manufacturer reference. The 130 hp version, identified solely by the code A17DTS, also appears in the list of codes for the 1.7 CDTI ecoFLEX variant, alongside codes specific to that version. Cross-referencing the engine code stamped on the block with the original manufacturer reference remains the most reliable method.

Failure causes specific to the 1.7 CDTI and precautions when replacing

On this diesel engine, turbo lubrication is particularly sensitive: degraded oil or a clogged feed circuit will attack the bearings and the CHRA first. The most common symptoms are an abnormal whistling noise as the revs rise, persistent blue smoke from the exhaust, and a gradual loss of power. Before fitting a new turbo, it is essential to address the root cause — oil quality and level, condition of the intake circuit, and any possible blockage in the oil return — otherwise the new unit will suffer the same fate. The turbos available for this engine are exclusively new turbos, sold as a straightforward purchase, with no old unit to return.
