9 diesel engines, 1 petrol: what this means for the Corsa's turbo

The turbocharged Corsa is almost entirely diesel-powered: nine CDTI, DI or DTI engines against a single petrol unit, the 1.6 Turbo. This split is no trivial detail — it determines the type of turbo fitted. On the diesel side, the 1.3 CDTI (engine codes Z13DT, Z13DTJ, Z13DTH, Z13DTE, A13DTE, A13DTR, B13DTC, B13DTN) and the 1.7 (Y17DT, Y17DTL, Z17DTL, Z17DTH, A17DTS) use variable-geometry or wastegate turbos depending on the generation and exact engine code, subject to moderate thermal stress but sensitive to clogging (EGR, DPF). The 1.6 Turbo petrol (engine code Z16LET, 150 hp and 192 hp in OPC form) operates in an entirely different thermal range: hotter exhaust gases, more aggressive demands, and a turbo whose design differs markedly from those on the diesel units.

1.3 CDTI and 1.7: related families, different turbos

The 1.3 CDTI is the most common engine on the Corsa, yet it spans several generations and power outputs — 70, 75, 90 or 95 hp — each with a different engine code. Mixing up a Z13DT (70 hp) with an A13DTE or A13DTR (95 hp) will result in selecting an incompatible turbo, even though the engine capacity is identical. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable criterion. The 1.7, for its part, ranges from the naturally aspirated-assisted DI (Y17DT / Y17DTL / Z17DTL) through to the 130 hp CDTI (A17DTS), with very different geometries and actuators from one version to the next.

Failure causes to address before replacement

On diesel units, the majority of turbo failures stem from degraded lubrication — contaminated oil or a blocked oil circuit — or from upstream clogging caused by the EGR or DPF. On the 1.6 petrol, the bearings and CHRA seals are put under greater strain by rapid temperature spikes. In both cases, fitting a new turbo without addressing the root cause risks premature failure. Common symptoms — a whistling noise under acceleration, exhaust smoke, or the engine entering limp mode — warrant a thorough diagnosis of the oil supply circuit before any work is carried out. All turbos listed here are new and sold without any unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Opel Corsa Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Opel Corsa Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
