Opel Corsa Gearbox: Does the Vehicle Generation Really Change the Part You Need?

Between 2000 and 2023, the Corsa went through several generations — notably C, D and E — and each cycle introduced new families of manual gearboxes. What was fitted to a 1.2 in 2003 is not the same as what equips a 1.2 in 2015: the engine codes Z12XE or Z12XEP (Corsa C) gave way to A12XER (Corsa D/E), and the associated gearboxes differ in both number of ratios and architecture. On the 1.2, both configurations exist in the catalogue: 5-speed manual and 6-speed manual, depending on the period and market. The year of first registration and the engine code are therefore the two reference points to cross-check before placing any order.

Diesel and Petrol: Two Engine Code Families to Tell Apart

On the diesel side, the 1.3 CDTi covers the codes Z13DT, Z13DTJ, Z13DTH and A13DTC — four variants for the same engine capacity, all paired with a 5-speed manual. The 1.5 CDTi, which appeared later with the code D15DT, uses a 6-speed manual instead: the two diesel units are not interchangeable on this point. On the petrol side, the 1.4 Turbo family covers the codes A14NET, A14NEL, B14NET, B14NEL, B14NEH and B14NEJ, with 5- or 6-speed gearboxes depending on the exact variant. The 1.6 Turbo (A16LET) is the only one to consistently receive a 6-speed manual in this range.

Key Points to Watch When Identifying Your Gearbox

The naturally aspirated 1.6 (codes Z16LER and A16LER) must not be confused with the 1.6 Turbo: same engine capacity, but different gearboxes and driveshafts. Likewise, the naturally aspirated 1.4 (Z14XEP, A14XER, A14XEL) will not accept the gearboxes from the 1.4 Turbo. Across all these engines, the available purchasing method is exchange: the old unit must be recoverable and complete for the transaction to go ahead.
