Which gearbox for the Corsa, depending on its generation and engine?

Between 2000 and 2023, the Corsa went through several major generations, and each generational break brought changes to gearboxes, engine codes and sometimes the number of ratios. What applied to a Corsa C diesel no longer applies to a Corsa E or F: the 5-speed manual gearbox dominated the range for a long time, before the 6-speed manual gradually became standard on more recent versions and the most powerful engines.

Diesel: from the Z13DT to the D15DT, two distinct families

On the diesel side, two families feature in this guide. The 1.3 CDTi covers four engine codes — Z13DT, Z13DTH, Z13DTJ, A13DTC — all paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, but these codes represent successive evolutions of the block and do not necessarily share the same physical gearbox. The 1.5 CDTi (code D15DT), introduced on more recent generations, comes with a 6-speed manual: the two diesel families must not be confused, as their gearboxes are not the same.

Petrol: 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 — 5 or 6 ratios depending on the engine and era

The 1.2 (Z12XE, Z12XEP, A12XER) was fitted with either a 5-speed or a 6-speed gearbox depending on the Corsa generation in question. The naturally aspirated 1.4 (Z14XEP, A14XER, A14XEL) is always equipped with a 5-speed. The 1.4 Turbo has the widest spread: six engine codes (A14NEL, A14NET, B14NEH, B14NEJ, B14NEL, B14NET) and two gearbox types — 5 or 6 ratios — which makes it essential to check the engine code carefully before placing any order. The 1.6 (A16LER, Z16LER) comes with a 5-speed, whilst the 1.6 Turbo (A16LER, A16LET, Z16LER) moves to a 6-speed, reflecting its performance positioning on the Corsa OPC and related variants.
