Meriva A and Meriva B: two generations of versatile city car, two gearbox philosophies from 2003 to 2017

The Meriva established itself as an urban and suburban family vehicle — often heavily loaded and frequently driven in stop-and-go conditions. This usage profile takes a direct toll on the gearbox: clutches under strain at low speeds, repeated gear changes, engine temperature rarely stabilised. When the gearbox gives up, it is rarely a coincidence. The challenge when it comes to replacement is identifying the correct unit from among the five engine variants and three transmission types that span this fourteen-year range.

Petrol: from the Easytronic to 6 speeds, depending on the engine and year

The 1.4 naturally aspirated (codes A14XER, B14XER) is fitted exclusively with a 5-speed manual. The 1.6 (Z16XE, Z16XEP) is the only Meriva application to feature the Easytronic — an automated manual gearbox whose actuator is not included in the unit sold. This is a critical point: if the fault lies with the actuator, the gearbox itself is not the issue. Vehicles fitted with the 1.6 in standard manual form receive a separate 5-speed unit. The 1.4 Turbo (A14NEL, A14NET), introduced on the Meriva B from 2010 onwards, is the only variant to offer a choice between a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed manual — two units that are not interchangeable.

Diesel: 1.3 and 1.7 CDTi, different gearbox families

The 1.3 CDTi (A13DTC, Z13DTJ) is fitted with a 5-speed manual only. The 1.7 CDTi (A17DTC, A17DTS, Z17DTH, Z17DTR) may be equipped, depending on the variant and year, with either a 5-speed or a 6-speed: the engine code stamped on the block is essential to identify the correct unit, as engine capacity alone is not sufficient. The 1.7 CDTi is the most common diesel powertrain in this range, and also the one for which gearbox configurations vary the most. In intensive use — heavy urban driving, frequent gradients — the synchromesh rings on the lower gears are the first components to show signs of wear on these diesel variants.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Opel model in stock?

We currently list 19 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Opel?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Opel?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
