Opel Astra Gearbox 2002 to 2023: from the Easytronic Automated Manual to the Widespread 6-Speed

Over twenty years of production, the Astra never offered a torque-converter automatic or a dual-clutch gearbox: the transmission is either a conventional manual or the Easytronic automated manual gearbox. The latter is available only on the 1.0 Turbo (engine codes B10XFL, B10XFT); all other engines are fitted exclusively with a manual gearbox. The key shift between generations is the move from five to six speeds: the naturally aspirated 1.4, the 2.2 (Z22SE, Z22YH) and the earliest versions of the 1.7 CDTi retain the 5-speed gearbox, whereas virtually all more recent or more powerful engines come with the 6-speed manual.

Petrol or diesel: gearbox families that don't mix

On the petrol side, the 1.4 Turbo (A14NEL, A14NET), the 1.6 Turbo (A16LER, A16LET, Z16LET), the 1.2 (D12XHT, F12SHT), the 1.2 Turbo (F12XHL, F12XHT) and the 2.0 Turbo (A20NFT, B20NFT, Z20LEH, Z20LER, Z20LET) all receive a 6-speed manual, but the gearboxes are not shared across these engines. Torque output and casing architecture differentiate the units: a gearbox from the 2.0 Turbo will not fit the 1.4 Turbo, even though both have six speeds.

On the diesel side, the 1.3 CDTi (A13DTE, Z13DTH) can be fitted with either a 5- or 6-speed manual depending on the year and specification, the 1.7 CDTi (A17DTE, A17DTR, Z17DTH, Z17DTL, Z17DTR) spans both gearbox generations, and the 1.9 CDTi (Z19DT, Z19DTH, Z19DTL) is invariably paired with the 6-speed manual. Here again, the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier for determining which unit matches the vehicle — particularly on the 1.7 CDTi, where five codes coexist within the same engine capacity.

The Easytronic: a unique automated manual gearbox, sold without its actuator

The Easytronic gearbox on the 1.0 Turbo is an electro-hydraulically operated manual gearbox, not a conventional automatic in the strict sense. It is offered here without the robot unit or actuator, as this component is subject to a separate diagnosis and treatment. If the fault is located in the mechanical part of the gearbox, this solution is the right one; if the problem lies solely with the actuator, the mechanical gearbox itself is not at fault.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Opel model in stock?

We currently list 38 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Opel?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Opel?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
