5-speed or 6-speed manual gearbox on the Combo D: which one fits which engine?

The answer depends directly on the engine, not the model year. Both the 1.3 CDTi and the 1.7 CDTi are paired with a 5-speed manual, whereas the 1.6 CDTi is the only variant to come with a 6-speed manual. These two gearbox families are not interchangeable, and the number of speeds alone is not enough to identify the correct unit.

Engine codes: the only reliable reference for the 1.3 CDTi

The 1.3 CDTi accounts for the majority of references available in this collection, with four distinct variants. It is found under engine codes Z13DTJ, Y13DT and Z13DT — three versions of the same engine capacity that do not necessarily take the same gearbox. The engine code, stamped on the block, is the only reliable reference to avoid ordering the wrong unit. The 1.7 CDTi (code Z17DTH) is less well represented but remains available in two variants. The 1.6 CDTi, codes A16FDL and A16FDH, is the most recent engine in the range for this generation of the Combo (2004–2011).

Two supply options available within this range

The gearboxes listed here are offered under two distinct arrangements: supply of a reconditioned unit on an exchange basis (your old unit must be returned), or rebuilding of the unit you send us, which is then returned to you. This second option may be the right choice when the gearbox has characteristics specific to your vehicle, particularly for low-volume variants such as the 1.6 CDTi.
