Combo diesel 2004–2011: 5-speed or 6-speed gearbox depending on the engine?

The answer lies in the engine: the 1.3 CDTi and 1.7 CDTi come with a 5-speed manual, whereas the 1.6 CDTi is paired with a 6-speed manual. Mixing up the two families when ordering is the most common mistake, as the casings and gear ratios are not interchangeable.

Identify your engine precisely before anything else

The 1.3 CDTi accounts for the majority of references in this collection, with three distinct engine codes: Y13DT, Z13DT and Z13DTJ. These codes do not refer to the same mechanical variant and may correspond to gearboxes of slightly different design — checking the code stamped on the block is essential before taking any further steps. The 1.7 CDTi carries the code Z17DTH, also 5-speed but on a different architecture. The 1.6 CDTi, rarer in this generation of the Combo, is distinguished by its codes A16FDH and A16FDL and its 6-speed gearbox.

Two reconditioning options available

Gearboxes within this range are offered in two ways: on an exchange basis, or as a rebuild of your own unit — meaning your gearbox is reconditioned and returned to you. This second option can be the right choice when the gearbox has a reference or specification that is difficult to source otherwise, particularly for certain low-volume variants of the 1.3 CDTi.
