Opel Mokka gearbox from 2012 to 2019: an exclusively manual range, in 5 or 6 speeds depending on the engine

Unlike other compact SUVs of the same era, the Mokka was never offered in France with a torque-converter automatic or a dual-clutch gearbox: the entire range relies on Getrag manual gearboxes, either in 5 speeds for the naturally aspirated 1.4, or in 6 speeds for the 1.4 Turbo, the 1.7 CDTi and the 1.6 CDTi. This is an important point to check before placing any order: a 5-speed gearbox and a 6-speed gearbox are not interchangeable, even on the same engine block.

Identifying your engine precisely: engine codes and common pitfalls

The first pitfall concerns the 1.4: the codes A14NET and B14NET appear on both the naturally aspirated 1.4 and the 1.4 Turbo. These are two distinct engine variants with different gearboxes (5 or 6 speeds). The Turbo version always comes with the 6-speed gearbox; the naturally aspirated version with the 5-speed. Checking the engine code alone is therefore not enough: you must confirm whether the engine is turbocharged or not. For the diesels, both the 1.7 CDTi (A17DTS) and the 1.6 CDTi (B16DTH) use a 6-speed gearbox, but the Getrag references differ between the two families.

Known weak points on Mokka gearboxes

The 6-speed Getrag gearboxes fitted to the 1.4 Turbo are well known for difficulty selecting first gear and reverse in cold weather, usually caused by synchroniser wear. On the 1.7 CDTi, the lower ratios (1st and 2nd) are the first to be affected under heavy use or at high mileage. These symptoms — crunching when changing gear, a gear jumping out, difficulty engaging reverse — generally indicate a gearbox that has reached the end of its life rather than a problem with the external gear linkage.
