Mokka 2012 to 2019: a clear divide between 5-speed and 6-speed gearboxes across engine families

On the first-generation Mokka, every available gearbox is manual — no automatic, no automated manual. The distinction comes down to the number of ratios and the gearbox family: the 1.4 naturally aspirated gets a 5-speed manual (references GETRAG type AWP or AZ8), whereas the 1.4 Turbo, 1.7 CDTi and 1.6 CDTi all come with a 6-speed manual, but not from the same Getrag family. A 1.4 Turbo and a 1.7 CDTi from the same model year do not share their gearbox, and a reference taken from a petrol Turbo Mokka cannot be fitted to a diesel unit.

Engine codes: the key to identifying the right reference

Four engine codes cover the 2012–2019 production run: A14NET and B14NET for the 1.4 Turbo petrol engines (B14NET denotes the updated version of the block), A17DTS for the 1.7 CDTi, B16DTH for the 1.6 CDTi introduced during the production run. The switch from the 1.7 CDTi to the 1.6 CDTi was accompanied by a gearbox change: the Getrag references associated with the B16DTH (type BDL or BDS) differ from those of the A17DTS. Checking the code stamped on the engine is therefore the essential starting point before identifying any gearbox.

Specific points to watch on the Mokka

The Mokka is available in front-wheel-drive and 4x4 (All Wheel Drive) versions. The presence or absence of four-wheel drive affects the gearbox concerned: the two configurations do not share the same differential casing or driveshaft outputs. It is essential to specify the configuration when identifying the correct unit. In addition, the naturally aspirated 1.4 without a turbo is uncommon in France, and its 5-speed gearbox forms a separate family, with a significantly smaller number of references in circulation than the 6-speed units found in the turbocharged petrol and diesel versions.
