No. Between 2003 and 2015, the Astra 1.7 CDTi used two distinct gearbox families depending on the engine generation. The earlier years relied on a 5-speed manual, paired with engine codes Z17DTH, Z17DTL and Z17DTR. From the model years corresponding to codes A17DTE and A17DTR, the gearbox moved to 6 speeds, with different Getrag references. The vehicle's build date and, above all, the engine code stamped on the block are therefore the two essential identification points before placing any order.

Five engine codes, two gearbox architectures

This engine covers five codes: Z17DTH, Z17DTL, Z17DTR, A17DTE and A17DTR. The three Z-prefix codes belong to the earlier series; the two A-prefix codes mark the technical break towards the 6-speed unit. An A17DTR does not take the same gearbox as a Z17DTR, despite the identical engine capacity. Mixing up the two families is the most common mistake made with this engine: the casings, gear ratios and mountings all differ.

Known weak points on the 1.7 CDTi under heavy use

The 5-speed gearboxes of the Z17 series show well-documented wear on the 2nd and 3rd gear synchronisers under intensive urban use or at high mileages. On the 6-speed unit of the A17 series, complaints centre more on the input shaft bearing. In both cases, a dull noise in gear or difficulty engaging a specific ratio are the most widely reported early warning symptoms on this engine.
