The Astra 1.7 CDTi spanned three engine code families between 2003 and 2015

Over twelve years of production, the Astra 1.7 CDTi is not a single engine: it covers two distinct generations, separated by a change of prefix. The codes Z17DT, Z17DTH, Z17DTR and Z17DTJ correspond to the pre-facelift versions, whilst the codes A17DTS, A17DTJ, A17DTE, A17DTC and A17DTR refer to the next-generation blocks. These two families are not mechanically interchangeable, and the engine code — visible on the block itself — remains the only reliable means of identification.

Known weaknesses by generation

Z-prefix blocks, in particular the Z17DTH, are known to be susceptible to EGR valve fouling and cylinder head failure under heavy thermal load. A-prefix blocks have well-documented weaknesses in the timing chain and oil pressure management system. In both cases, the bare engine is supplied without ancillaries: the turbo, injection system, alternator and starter motor remain those of the original vehicle.
