The Insignia's 1.4 Turbo covers six distinct engine codes

This is the classic pitfall with this model: the engine capacity shown on the registration document is not enough to order the correct bare engine. The Insignia's 1.4 Turbo (2008–2017) comes in at least six code variants — A14NET, A14NEL, B14NET, B14NEL, D14NET, D14NEL — corresponding to generational updates, emissions standards or power output differences. These units share the same engine capacity but differ in their internal architecture, cylinder heads and ancillary components. Ordering without checking the code stamped on the block risks a fitment incompatibility.

Diesel: two 2.0 CDTi families and a 1.6 CDTi not to be confused

On the diesel side, the Insignia is fitted primarily with the 2.0 CDTi, itself available in several variants depending on power output and generation: the codes A20DTH_LBS, A20DTR_LBY and A20DTJ_LBX denote distinct units despite an identical engine capacity. The early 2.0 CDTi (A20DTH) is known for timing chain and turbo weaknesses to watch out for when buying. The 1.6 CDTi, introduced later, is referenced under the code B16DTH_LVL; more compact, it shares no structural components with the 2.0 units.

1.6 naturally aspirated petrol and the scope of the range

The Insignia was also sold with a naturally aspirated 1.6 petrol engine, code A16XER, found mainly in early production vehicles. This unit, less in demand as a reconditioned part, remains available. The full range covers model years 2008 to 2017, as bare engines only. For every engine variant, the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable identifier: production year and engine capacity alone are not sufficient to distinguish variants within the same family.
