On the Insignia, engine capacity alone does not identify a single engine: the engine code tells the whole story.

The clearest example is the 2.0 CDTi: three codes exist across the 2008–2017 period, A20DTH_LBS, A20DTJ_LBX and A20DTR_LBY, which correspond to distinct variants. Ordering on the basis of '2.0 CDTi' alone risks receiving an engine that is incompatible with your vehicle. The same logic applies to the 1.4 Turbo, which spans six codes — A14NEL, A14NET, B14NEL, B14NET, D14NEL, D14NET — where generations A, B and D represent significant internal engineering changes. The vehicle's year of manufacture helps narrow things down, but it is the code stamped on the block that gives the definitive answer.

Four engines, two fuel families

The Insignia range covered here comprises two petrol and two diesel engines. On the petrol side: the 1.6 naturally aspirated A16XER and the 1.4 Turbo — the latter by far the most common, with six distinct codes depending on year and power output. On the diesel side: the 2.0 CDTi (three codes) and the 1.6 CDTi B16DTH_LVL, which appeared later in the range. The 2.0 CDTi is well known for EGR valve and head gasket issues on certain versions; an internal mechanical failure often makes replacing the bare engine the more practical solution rather than a partial repair.

All references listed here are bare engines: the unit supplied does not include ancillary components (turbo, alternator, starter motor, water pump, etc.), which will need to be transferred or replaced during fitting.
