Movano A and Movano B: two generations, six diesel engines, incompatible engine codes

The Movano timeline divides the fleet cleanly into two. Up to 2010, the Movano A was built around Renault engines from the F9Q family (1.9 CDTi, codes F9Q-670, F9Q-750, F9Q-760, F9Q-762, F9Q-772, F9Q-774) and the G9T family (3.0 CDTi, code G9T-722). From 2010 onwards, the Movano B adopted the M9T family for the 2.3 CDTi (M9T706, M9T708, M9T880, M9T898) and the ZD3200 / ZD3202 blocks for the 2.2 D and 2.2 D 120. These families are architecturally distinct: an F9Q engine cannot replace an M9T, and vice versa.

Identifying the correct engine by engine code, not just engine capacity

The 1.9 CDTi accounts for the majority of available references, with six engine code variants depending on the year and power output (90 to 120 hp). On the Movano A, two F9Q suffixes sometimes coexist within the same model year range, depending on the payload rating or cab-chassis version.The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable identifier: engine capacity alone is not sufficient to determine which reference is correct. The Movano B's 2.3 CDTi follows the same logic, with four distinct M9T codes differentiated by power output (100, 125, 145 hp) and emissions standards.

Symptoms and key points to watch for by engine family

The F9Q engines in the Movano A are robust units but are susceptible to EGR circuit fouling and variable-geometry turbo issues, which can lead to a gradual loss of power before outright mechanical failure. The G9T 3.0 CDTi is less common and harder to source. On the Movano B side, the M9T engines are known for timing chain failures on early examples (2010–2014): cold-start noise and excessive slack are warning signs that should not be ignored. The ZD3 blocks (2.2 D and 2.2 D 120) share a common architecture but produce different power outputs — always check the suffix before ordering. All engines are available as bare units, sold on an exchange basis, covering the 2000–2025 period.
