Opel Meriva Engines from 2003 to 2017: two generations, four engine families, a multitude of codes

The Meriva A (2003–2010) and the Meriva B (2010–2017) share certain engine capacities but not their blocks. The 1.7 CDTi is a perfect illustration of this apparent — and misleading — continuity: the first generation revolves around the codes Z17DT and Z17DTH, whilst the Meriva B received the family A17DTS, A17DTJ, A17DTE, A17DTC, A17DTR or A17DTJ, depending on the power output and the exact year of manufacture. These blocks are not interchangeable between generations despite having an identical engine capacity.

Identification guide by engine type

The 1.7 CDTi is the most widely represented engine in the catalogue, with nine distinct references covering the entire 2003–2017 period. For the 1.4 Turbo (Meriva B only), six codes exist — including B14NET, B14NEL, A14NET, A14NEL, D14NET and D14NEL — depending on the emissions standard and the exact model year. The 1.6 naturally aspirated (Meriva A) comes in three codes, Z16XEP, Z16XE and X16XEL, the last being the oldest and present from 2003. The 1.3 CDTi (code Y13DT) applies to only a handful of early-period Meriva A vehicles; just one reference is available for this engine.

Key points to check before ordering

On the 1.7 CDTi, the final letter of the engine code (H, S, J, E, C, R…) reflects differences in power output — 80, 100 or 110 hp — and sometimes in the valve timing or engine management system. Ordering on the basis of engine capacity alone risks receiving an incompatible block. The engine code stamped on the block, combined with the vehicle's year of manufacture, remains the only reliable criterion. All engines on this page are supplied as a bare engine: the turbo, injectors, alternator and starter motor are not included and must be transferred from the old block or ordered separately.
