Meriva 2003–2017: 4 engine types, 19 engine codes — which one actually matches your unit?

The Meriva spans fourteen years of production and four distinct engine types, each with its own engine codes stamped on the block. The correct code is the only reliable starting point: the same engine capacity can conceal two incompatible engine families depending on the year or power output.

Diesel: the 1.7 CDTi dominates, the 1.3 CDTi remains a rarity

The 1.7 CDTi is the most common diesel engine fitted to the Meriva, with nine engine codes on record: Z17DT, Z17DTH, Z17DTJ, Z17DTR, A17DTC, A17DTE, A17DTJ, A17DTR and A17DTS. The Z prefix denotes versions predating the Meriva B; the A prefix covers post-facelift versions. Both generations share the same engine capacity but are not mechanically identical — confusing a Z17DT with an A17DTE will result in the wrong part. The 1.3 CDTi (code Y13DT) is very much a minority fitment on this model: a single reference, not to be confused with the 1.7 family.

Petrol: 1.6 naturally aspirated and 1.4 Turbo — six codes to tell apart

The 1.6 naturally aspirated (X16XEL, Z16XE, Z16XEP) is fitted mainly to the Meriva A. These three codes correspond to different emissions and power variants and are not interchangeable. The 1.4 Turbo arrives on the Meriva B with six codes — A14NEL, A14NET, B14NEL, B14NET, D14NEL, D14NET — where the A, B and D prefixes mark distinct evolutions of the same turbo base. Checking the code stamped on the block is essential before placing any order, especially as two Meriva B vehicles from the same model year can carry different codes depending on the market or trim level.
