Vivaro Engine 2001 to 2024: four diesel generations, two replacement options

Over this twenty-three-year span, the Vivaro went through four diesel engine families — F9Q (1.9 CDTi, 2001–2006), M9R (2.0 CDTi, 2006–2014), R9M (1.6 CDTi, 2014–2019) and DV5R (1.5 CDTi, from 2019 onwards) — and engine capacity alone is never enough to identify a specific engine. What guides the choice here is first the vehicle generation, then the engine code stamped on the block, which distinguishes, for example, nine M9R variants or fourteen R9M variants within a single engine capacity.

When reconditioning your own unit makes the most sense

For older blocks — F9Q above all — exchange availability decreases as the vehicle parc ages. When a code such as F9Q-670 or F9Q-750 becomes difficult to source, having your own engine reconditioned (the customer's block is sent in, rebuilt, then returned) is often the most reliable route: you retain the unit's history and avoid the uncertainty of an exchange on a thinly populated parc. For the more recent families — R9M and DV5R — exchange remains the standard solution, as the parc is much larger.

Key points to watch by engine family

The 1.9 CDTi (F9Q) is known for EGR valve and turbo issues on high-mileage vehicles; six codes cover this engine between 2001 and 2006. The 2.0 CDTi (M9R) has a poor reputation for its chain-driven timing system (tensioner, guides) and high-pressure fuel supply; nine codes are spread across 2006 to 2014. The 1.6 CDTi (R9M) is the most widely represented here with fourteen codes — including R9MA4A4, R9MD4D4 and the R9MM series — and has accumulated reports of cylinder head and cooling circuit problems. The 1.5 CDTi (DV5RUC_YHV) only appears on the post-2019 Vivaro C; a single code is referenced at this stage. All engines are sold as bare engines: ancillaries, turbo and injection components are not included.
