Nine M9R engine codes for a single 2.0 CDTi: why engine capacity alone is not enough

On the Vivaro from 2006 to 2014, the label '2.0 CDTi' covers nine distinct engine codes within the same familyM9R: M9R630, M9R692, M9R780, M9R782, M9R784, M9R786, M9R788, M9R7E7 and M9R7M7. These variants correspond to different power outputs (from 90 to 115 hp depending on the version), specific injection calibrations and internal differences that make the units non-interchangeable. Ordering on the basis of the '2.0 CDTi' label alone therefore risks receiving an incompatible engine.

Check the engine code before placing any order

The exact code is stamped directly on the block, usually visible on the gearbox side. It is this code — not the year or the fiscal power rating — that determines the reference of the bare engine to order. Two Vivaro vans of the same year and the same stated power output can carry different M9R codes depending on their destination market or specification level.

Specific points to watch on the M9R in commercial use

The M9R is a Renault-Nissan block shared with several light commercial vehicles of the same generation. In intensive use — frequent full loads, repeated short journeys — it is well known for premature timing gear wear and a susceptibility to injector fouling. On a Vivaro regularly operated at full payload, these stresses accumulate far more quickly than in mixed use. The bare engine supplied does not include ancillary components: the timing system, injectors, turbo and accessories must be reused or replaced according to their condition at the time of removal.
