Opel Zafira Engine: the units that caused problems before 2012 and what that means for replacement

Across Zafira models produced between 2001 and 2016, it is predominantly the diesel variants that account for the most well-documented failures. The 1.7 CDTi (codes Z17DTJ, Z17DTR, A17DTR) is known for head gasket failures and a clogged turbo, typically preceded by abnormal oil consumption or persistent blue smoke. The 2.0 CDTi (code A20DT) is particularly prone to timing chain failures, with a characteristic noise on cold starts serving as an early warning sign. The 2.2 CDTi (code Y22DTR_L50) shares a robust diesel architecture but deteriorates poorly when servicing has been irregular, particularly with regard to the injectors and cooling circuit.

Petrol: two generations, two distinct units

The 1.6 petrol comes in two clearly distinct engine codes: X16XEL for the earlier years, A16XER for the later versions. These two references are not interchangeable: checking the code stamped on the block before placing any order is essential. The 1.6 CDTi (code B16DTH), which appeared later in the range, is a more recent unit with fewer real-world reports available for this model.

What this means for replacement
