Same 1.7 CDTi on the Zafira: why Z17DTJ, Z17DTR and A17DTR are not the same engine

It's the classic trap with the Zafira: a buyer searches for a 1.7 CDTi engine, goes by engine capacity alone and orders the wrong part. Yet this diesel unit comes in three distinct engine codes — Z17DTJ, Z17DTR and A17DTR — which correspond to different generations and specifications that are not interchangeable. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable way to remove any doubt; the vehicle's year can point you in the right direction but is not enough on its own, as production changes do not always align with the model year.

Four engines, two clearly separate families

The range covers the Zafira from 2001 to 2016 across four engine capacities: the 1.6 petrol (codes X16XEL and A16XER), the 1.7 CDTi diesel (three codes — see above), the 2.0 CDTi (code A20DT) and the 2.2 CDTi (code Y22DTR_L50). The two larger-capacity diesels each exist under a single code, which makes identification straightforward. The 1.6 petrol comes in two codes (X16XEL for earlier versions, A16XER for the next generation): again, the same engine capacity does not mean the same block.

Locate the code before placing any order

On Opel blocks from this period, the engine code is stamped directly onto the block — typically on the front face or the side of the cylinder head, depending on the family. For the 1.7 CDTi, the difference between Z17DTJ (the lower-torque version, often associated with the earlier years) and Z17DTR or A17DTR (different torque outputs and engine management systems) has a direct bearing on the ancillary components and mounting points; swapping between these references is not an option.
