Naturally aspirated petrol or CDTi diesel: eight engine variants, two distinct engine families on the Astra

In this range, the dividing line is not between body generations but between two engine families with entirely different architectures. On the petrol side, the Astra was fitted with naturally aspirated units — the 1.4 and the 1.6 — as well as turbocharged units with the 1.4 Turbo. On the diesel side, five engine capacities coexist: 1.3 CDTi, 1.6 CDTi, 1.7 CDTi, 1.9 CDTi and 2.0 CDTi, each covering a different production window between 1998 and 2019. These two families share no internal components, and selecting the correct bare engine depends first and foremost on the code stamped on the block, not on the engine capacity alone.

The CDTi diesel: five engine capacities, twenty engine codes not to be confused

The 1.7 CDTi is the most widely represented diesel engine here, with nine references and nine distinct codes — Z17DT, Z17DTH, Z17DTJ, Z17DTR, A17DTC, A17DTE, A17DTJ, A17DTR, A17DTS — which are not interchangeable with one another. The prefix Z denotes the earlier variants, the prefix A the later developments; power output and cylinder head differ depending on the code. The 1.9 CDTi comes in 3 codes (Z19DT, Z19DTH, Z19DTJ), with notable differences in cylinder head and injection system between the base version and the H and J variants. The 1.6 CDTi, a more recent unit, covers B16DTE, B16DTL, B16DTU — a family that is technically quite distinct from the 1.7 despite the similar engine capacity. The 2.0 CDTi (A20DT) and the 1.3 CDTi (Y13DT) each appear under a single code only, making identification more straightforward.

Petrol 1.4 and 1.6: naturally aspirated and turbo — units that cannot be substituted for one another

The naturally aspirated 1.4 and the 1.4 Turbo share the same engine capacity but no common architecture. The 1.4 covers six codes (A14XEL, A14XER, B14XEL, B14XER, D14XEL, D14XER), the 1.4 Turbo seven others (A14NEL, A14NET, B14NEL, B14NET, B14XFT, D14NEL, D14NET). The middle letter of the code — X for naturally aspirated, N for turbo — is the primary distinguishing criterion. The 1.6 petrol is limited to four codes (Z16XE, Z16XEP, X16XEL, A16XER), covering an older production range. For every petrol and diesel engine alike, it is the full code stamped on the block that determines compatibility with the bare engine.
