From THP to PureTech 130: how city cars and small urban SUVs place particular demands on the 1.2 turbo

The 1.2 THP, rebranded PureTech in its more recent versions, is fitted primarily to city cars and urban crossovers — vehicles used in stop-and-go driving, with short thermal cycles and repeated heat build-up before the engine ever reaches its optimum operating temperature. This usage profile is precisely what puts the turbo's lubrication circuit under strain: extended idling after a short journey leaves the CHRA at temperature without sufficient oil flow to dissipate residual heat. On this three-cylinder petrol engine, the phenomenon is well documented and is the leading cause of premature bearing wear.

Multiple engine codes, one engine capacity: identification first

The 1.2 THP / PureTech is available in three power outputs — 110, 130 and 131 hp — and engine codes vary depending on the power output and the generation of the vehicle. On the PSA side, the codes EB2ADTS and EB2DTS are used; on the VAG-compatible or internal PSA side, the codes HNP, HNS, HNV, HNY and HNZ appear depending on the documentation. A single code can cover several power outputs, and conversely the same power output may correspond to different codes depending on the vehicle and the production period. The manufacturer's turbo reference — and its equivalents — therefore remains the only reliable anchor point for confirming compatibility, well ahead of engine capacity or stated power output.

New turbos: what that means in practice

All turbos listed on this page are new turbos, sold with no old unit to return. The vehicles covered include several Peugeot models as well as the Citroën C4 Cactus. Before any replacement, it is essential to address the root cause of the failure: a blocked oil strainer, an air leak upstream of the turbo, or poor or degraded engine oil. Fitting a new turbo without having identified and corrected the underlying cause will inevitably lead to another failure. Common symptoms on this engine include a whistling noise under acceleration, blue smoke from the exhaust, or a noticeable loss of performance, sometimes accompanied by an engine warning message.
