New or reconditioned Ford turbo: which option depending on the model and engine?

The collection covers thirteen Ford models — from the Transit to the Mustang — taking in the Focus, Mondeo, Galaxy, Ranger, Kuga and S-Max — across two ranges, diesel and petrol. Depending on the reference, the turbo is available as a new unit (no old part to return) or on an exchange basis for reconditioned turbos. This first criterion immediately guides the choice: if your reference is available new, that is the most straightforward route; if it is only available reconditioned, the exchange basis applies. For turbos that have become rare or for older engines — certain 2.4 Di and 2.4 TDE Transit units or the 1.9 TDI Galaxy — rebuilding the original part can make sense when the exact reference is no longer available on an exchange basis and you wish to keep your own remanufactured turbo.

A very mixed range of engine families: watch out for reference mix-ups

Ford has produced numerous engine families and power outputs across the same engine capacity. The 2.0 TDCi is available in 115, 130, 136 and 140 hp variants with distinct engine codes (TNCA, TNCB, TNCD, TNCF, TNBA…), each of which may require a different turbo. The 2.0 EcoBlue likewise comes in three power outputs — 105, 130 and 170 hp — with codes R9DA, R9CD, R9CI. On the petrol side, the 2.0 EcoBoost ranges from 203 to 240 hp depending on whether it is the ST or standard version, and the manufacturer references differ (series CJ5E, CJ5Z, CB5E, CB5Z). The stated power output alone is therefore not enough to identify the correct turbo: the engine code stamped on the manufacturer's plate and the original Ford reference — in alphanumeric format such as AG9N-6K682-AE or BK3Q-6K682-NA — remain the essential identification points.

Known weak points and causes of failure not to overlook

On the 1.8 TDCi (codes BJFA to BJFD, BKFA), oil circuit fouling and deterioration of the turbo bearings are well-documented failures. The Transit 2.2 TDCi (UNCA, UNCB) is known for turbo lubrication problems linked to missed oil change intervals. On the petrol EcoBoost engines, carbon deposits at the intake and air circuit seal leaks (intercooler, hoses) weaken the CHRA. Before any replacement, it is essential to address the root cause — oil quality and pressure, EGR or DPF fouling, air ingestion — otherwise the replacement part risks being destroyed in turn. Common symptoms include blue or black exhaust smoke, a characteristic whistling noise, a gradual loss of power, or the engine entering limp-home mode.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Ford.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Ford?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
