NV400 2.3 dCi: manual or Quickshift – which gearbox matches which engine code?

The NV400 2.3 dCi is fitted with one of two distinct transmissions depending on the variant: a 6-speed manual or the Quickshift automated manual gearbox, and these two families are not interchangeable. The key to telling them apart is the engine code stamped on the block — six codes are recorded across NV400s produced between 2011 and 2019: M9T670, M9T700, M9T702, M9T870, M9T890 and M9T898.

What the M9T family covers between 2011 and 2019

All these codes belong to the same 2.3 dCi block, but they span different power outputs and model years. The gearbox paired with each code varies accordingly: some codes are found exclusively with the manual, others exclusively with the Quickshift, and a few can appear in either configuration depending on the year and body style (panel van, combi, chassis cab). Mixing up the two families risks a mechanical incompatibility at the point of fitting.

Quickshift: an automated gearbox sold without its actuator

The Quickshift is an automated manual gearbox. The units offered here are supplied without the electrohydraulic actuator or robot unit: this component is handled separately and must be checked or replaced independently. This is a frequent source of error during fault diagnosis, as the symptoms — rough gear changes, refusal to engage a gear — can be wrongly attributed to the mechanical gearbox alone. Two purchasing options are available across the full NV400 range: exchange or customer unit rebuild, depending on the condition of the old unit.
