The NV400 2.3 dCi gearbox fails before the M9T engine

On this van, the transmission is statistically the first component to fail. The 6-speed manual paired with M9T units suffers from premature synchroniser wear, most noticeable when changing down through the lower gears from cold, followed by a dull rumble in direct drive that points to worn gearbox bearings. The Quickshift (automated manual) version adds its own actuator-specific problems, but the mechanical gearbox itself shares the same internal weaknesses. These symptoms deteriorate rapidly on a heavily loaded vehicle in intensive urban use: once the clunking on downshifts becomes constant, replacement is unavoidable.

Six M9T engine codes to distinguish before placing any order

The 2.3 dCi in the NV400 (2011–2019) covers six distinct engine codes: M9T670, M9T700, M9T702, M9T870, M9T890 and M9T898. These variants correspond to different power outputs and mechanical revisions, which determine the exact compatible gearbox reference. An M9T670 and an M9T870 do not take the same unit, even in vans that look identical from the outside. Checking the engine code stamped on the block — not just the power output in horsepower — is essential to identify the correct gearbox. Rebuilding your own unit is available as an alternative to an exchange, which can be useful when the reference is rare or the vehicle has version-specific characteristics.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Nissan model in stock?

We currently list 11 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Nissan?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Nissan?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
