2.3 dCi NV400 Engine: thirteen M9T codes covering production 2011–2019

The NV400's 2.3 dCi is based on the M9T family, which comes in thirteen variants referenced here: M9T672, M9T676, M9T678, M9T686, M9T690, M9T692, M9T694, M9T696, M9T698, M9T870, M9T876, M9T890 and M9T704. The code stamped on the block is the only detail that distinguishes these engines from one another — two NV400s of the same year and the same stated power output can carry different codes depending on the market or production run, and the corresponding blocks are not interchangeable.

The earliest codes (M9T672 to M9T686) correspond to the first years the NV400 was on sale, around 2011–2013. The mid-range references (M9T690 to M9T698) cover the 2013–2016 period, whilst M9T870, M9T876, M9T890 and M9T704 appear on vehicles produced through to 2019. This timeline is a guide only: the code engraved on the casing remains the key identification detail and should always be checked first.

Things to watch out for on the M9T in commercial use

Under intensive use — frequent loading at maximum gross weight, repeated short journeys — the M9T builds up carbon deposits in the inlet manifold and places considerable strain on the variable-geometry turbo. These conditions accelerate piston ring wear and head gasket deterioration on high-mileage blocks. The engines offered here are bare engines: ancillaries, turbo, injection system and accessories are not included and must be reused or replaced separately at the time of fitting.
