11 K9K engine codes for the Nissan Note 1.5 dCi: seven years of evolution not to be confused

Between 2006 and 2013, the Nissan Note 1.5 dCi went through several stages of development of the K9K unit, resulting in eleven distinct variants: K9K700, K9K702, K9K704, K9K710, K9K730, K9K734, K9K780, K9K790, K9K804, K9K806 and K9K292. From one variant to the next, the power output, internal specifications and ancillary equipment of the unit change. Two Notes with the same engine capacity and identical appearance can house bare engines that are incompatible with one another.

Identify the correct K9K code before placing any order

The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable criterion: the registration year and the stated power output (63, 68 or 86 hp depending on the version) are not sufficient to identify it with certainty. The earliest series — K9K700 to K9K704 — correspond to the 2006–2008 model years. The codes K9K710, K9K730 and K9K734 cover mainly the 2008–2010 period, whilst the variants K9K780, K9K790, K9K804, K9K806 and K9K292 appear on the most recent examples up to 2013. A single model year can therefore span two code families depending on the vehicle's exact date of manufacture.

Key points to watch out for with the K9K on this model

The K9K family is known for blocked EGR valve issues and premature injector wear on versions subjected to heavy urban use — the typical usage pattern of the Note. On the high-pressure variants of the 800 series, the oil circuit and bore dimensions differ from those of the early 700 series: a 700-series bare engine cannot be substituted for an 800-series code without first checking the mounting points and connections.
