X-Trail diesel: a robust M9R built to last, an R9M more prone to early failure

The two diesel engine families in the X-Trail do not share the same reliability profile. The 2.0 dCi M9R, produced from 2007 to 2014 and available in seven variants (M9R721, M9R750, M9R760, M9R802, M9R830, M9R832, M9R833), is generally regarded as a solid long-term unit, though it is not without its weaknesses: timing chain wear, injector fouling, and on certain variants, EGR valve issues that can lead to a gradual loss of power or black smoke. These symptoms rarely result in outright failure, but they do accelerate internal deterioration if maintenance is not kept up to scratch.

The 1.6 dCi R9M, introduced from 2014 and fitted until 2019 under six distinct codes (R9M408, R9M409, R9MA4A4, R9MMD, R9MME, R9M_414), tells a different story. This family is known for problems with its oil-bath belt-driven timing system: when the belt deteriorates or the oil circuit is neglected, internal damage can be swift and irreparable. Abnormal oil consumption or a dull knocking noise on start-up are warning signs that should never be ignored on this engine.

Identifying the right engine before you order

For both families, engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the exact unit. On the M9R, seven codes cover distinct technical evolutions between 2007 and 2014; on the R9M, six codes span the 2014–2019 period. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference for selecting the correct part. The codes from each family are mutually incompatible and cannot be substituted across generations. All engines in this collection are offered as bare engines.
