Primastar diesel: from the F9Q to the G9U, a decade of engines from 2002 to 2014

The Primastar was produced exclusively with diesel engines throughout its entire production run. Three engine capacities succeeded or coexisted with one another depending on the year: the 1.9 dCi launched the range in 2002, the 2.0 dCi gradually replaced it from 2006 onwards, and the 2.5 dCi covered the need for a more powerful variant through to 2014. Engine capacity alone does not therefore determine the correct unit: it is the combination of capacity, year and engine code that matters.

F9Q, M9R, G9U: three families, distinct codes

The 1.9 dCi is based on the F9Q family and has six referenced variants: F9Q-670, F9Q-750, F9Q-760, F9Q-762, F9Q-772 and F9Q-774. These codes correspond to different calibrations and cannot be substituted for one another without prior verification. The 2.0 dCi belongs to the M9R family with four codes: M9R786, M9R788, M9R7E7 and M9R7M7. The 2.5 dCi, less common, comes in two G9U codes: G9U-750 and G9U720. In every case, the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference for ordering the correct bare engine.

Key points to watch depending on engine capacity

The F9Q is a robust unit but susceptible to injector fouling and timing belt wear under intensive urban use — a common profile for a light commercial vehicle. The M9R (2.0 dCi) experienced sump cracking issues on certain production runs, a point to check at identification. The G9U (2.5 dCi) was fitted to the most heavily loaded variants; oil pump failure is a known symptom on high-mileage examples. In all three cases, only the bare engine is offered here.
