Primastar diesel 2002–2014: F9Q, G9U or M9R — which engine actually powers your van?

The Primastar spanned twelve years of production with three diesel engine families that share neither architecture nor parts. Up to around 2006, the 1.9 dCi is based on the F9Q family — six distinct engine codes listed in our records (F9Q-670, F9Q-750, F9Q-760, F9Q-762, F9Q-774, F9Q-772). From the mid-2000s onwards, Nissan introduced the 2.0 dCi on the M9R platform (M9R786, M9R788, M9R7M7, M9R7E7), an engine that differs significantly from the F9Q, particularly in its valve timing and engine management. The 2.5 dCi covers the higher-load variants with engine codes G9U-720 and G9U-750, a larger-displacement engine present throughout the entire production run.

Why the engine code is critical here

On the Primastar, engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the block: several variants of the 1.9 dCi coexist with different power outputs and specifications depending on the year of first registration and the target market. An F9Q-750 and an F9Q-772 are two distinct engines despite displaying the same capacity. The six-character code, visible on the block itself, is the only reliable reference before placing any order.

Key points to watch by engine family

The F9Q is known for blocked EGR valve issues and weakened head gaskets on high-mileage examples — symptoms commonly seen on vans used in urban stop-start driving. The M9R can suffer turbo failures linked to oil circuit contamination; a thorough check of the oil feed pipes is recommended before refitting. The G9U, more robust under intensive use, remains sensitive to fuel quality where the high-pressure injectors are concerned. The engines listed here are bare engines: ancillaries, turbo, injectors and accessories are not included.
