4 engine variants, 3 engine families: why the X-Trail gearbox often gives up before 200,000 km

On the X-Trail T30 and T31 generations (2007–2014), the 6-speed manual gearbox is the only configuration available, regardless of engine. What sets these vehicles apart is the variety of engine blocks fitted — and the specific weaknesses of each. The 2.0 dCi (M9R) is well known for subjecting its gearbox to severe torque spikes when the dual-mass flywheel is worn: the gearbox absorbs repeated shocks that accelerate synchro wear, particularly in 2nd and 3rd. On the 2.2 dCi (YD22DDTi / YD22ETi), difficult gear changes in 1st and 2nd, accompanied by clunking noises when cold, are the most common signs of a gearbox nearing the end of its life. The 1.6 dCi (R9M) and the 1.6 Turbo essence (MR16DDT) are less prone to these issues, but their gearboxes remain sensitive to low oil levels — a frequent cause of crunching when changing down.

Identifying your exact gearbox before ordering

The X-Trail is fitted with mechanically different gearboxes depending on the engine, even though all have 6 speeds. The engine codes YD22DDTi and YD22ETi both correspond to the 2.2 dCi but refer to two distinct variants: they do not share the same gearbox. Confusing these two codes leads to a direct incompatibility. Likewise, the M9R (2.0 dCi) and the R9M (1.6 dCi) are two Renault-Nissan engine blocks from different generations, with casings and couplings that are not interchangeable. The engine code stamped on the block — not just the engine capacity — is the only reliable way to match the correct gearbox.

    Two supply options available

For this range, EDEN BOITES offers either a reconditioned exchange unit or a rebuild of your own gearbox, which is then returned to you. This second option can be the right choice when the gearbox is rare or the exact reference is difficult to source — particularly for the 2.2 dCi versions, which are less common on the replacement parts market.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Nissan model in stock?

We currently list 7 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Nissan?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Nissan?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
