Same 5-speed gearbox, three different engines: RD28, TD42 and ZD30DDTi do not take the same unit

On the Patrol, the identification pitfall is very real: all diesel engines in the range share a five-speed manual gearbox, yet the parts are not interchangeable between engine families. The 2.8 TD comes in three engine code variants — RD28, RD28T and RD28Ti — corresponding to distinct states of tune (naturally aspirated, turbo, turbo intercooler). The 4.2 TD follows the same logic with the codes TD42, TD42T and TD42Ti. Mixing up an RD28Ti with a TD42T at the point of ordering will invariably result in the wrong part being supplied: checking the engine code stamped on the block — rather than relying solely on the engine capacity shown on the registration document — is the only reliable way to identify the correct reference.

The 3.0 dCi — a special case in the range

The 3.0 dCi (ZD30DDTi) is the most recent engine in this range and the only common-rail unit in this collection. Its five-speed manual gearbox is mechanically distinct from those used with the RD28 and TD42 engines. This engine is also well known for its sensitivity to overheating and piston failure, which can sometimes cause indirect damage to the transmission during a serious engine failure: the condition of the gearbox must be carefully assessed in this context.

Two purchasing options available depending on your situation

The Patrol gearboxes in this collection are available on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of your own unit. This second option, which is distinct from the first, involves entrusting us with your original gearbox so that it can be reconditioned and returned to you. It is particularly relevant when the vehicle is used intensively off-road and traceability of the unit matters, or when the exchange reference is no longer available for the oldest engines in the range (naturally aspirated RD28, TD42 without turbo).
