Six engine variants, two types of manual gearbox: why the Qashqai suffers so many transmission failures

Over the 2007–2024 period, the Qashqai spanned two generations with six distinct engine variants, all fitted with manual gearboxes — 5 or 6 speeds depending on the version. This breadth of variants partly explains the high frequency of failures recorded: each gearbox family has its own specific weaknesses. On diesel versions, the 6-speed gearbox paired with the K9K (282, 430 or 636) shows early synchromesh wear, frequently reported from as low as 100 000 to 150 000 km, with stiff or refused gear changes in 2nd and 3rd. Identifying the correct gearbox: engine code takes priority over engine capacity

Two different engine variants share the same code MR16DDT: the 1.6 DIG-T and the 1.6 Turbo. Same code, different contexts. Conversely, the 1.2 Turbo covers three codes — HR12DDT, HRA2 and HRA2DDT — which do not all correspond to the same gearbox. Relying solely on engine capacity to select the right transmission is a common mistake among private customers and some trade professionals alike: the engine code stamped on the block and the vehicle's year of manufacture remain the two essential checks to carry out before placing any order.

1.3 Turbo and recent developments

Introduced on the facelifted Qashqai J2 and then on the J3, the HR13DDT (1.3 Turbo) is fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox specific to this generation. Workshop feedback on this transmission remains limited given its relative youth, but vibration under load and sump leaks have already been documented on high-mileage examples.
