Qashqai: which engine makes it worth reconditioning your own gearbox rather than taking a reconditioned one from stock?

The question is a practical one: on this model, the only available sales method is exchange for all engine variants. Rebuilding the customer's original unit is not offered here. This point is worth stating clearly, because on certain rare or highly specific vehicles, that option changes the equation — but that is not the case on the Qashqai, where the volume of reconditioned gearboxes held in stock covers all six engine variants referenced, from the 1.5 dCi to the 1.3 Turbo, across a range spanning 2007 to 2024.

Six engine variants, nine engine codes: the matches you cannot afford to get wrong

The Qashqai spans two generations and a wide range of engines. On the diesel side, the 1.5 dCi comes with engine codes K9K282, K9K430 et K9K636, and the 1.6 dCi with code R9M. On the petrol side, the 1.2 Turbo carries engine code HR12DDT, the 1.6 DIG-T code MR16DDT, the 1.3 Turbo codes HRA2DDT et HRA2, and the 1.6 Turbo code HR13DDT. This last engine is the only one to be fitted with two types of gearbox depending on the version: a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed manual. All other engine variants are exclusively fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier for avoiding any confusion between gearboxes whose casings are similar but whose gear ratios differ.

Symptoms and points to watch by engine family

On the 1.5 dCi K9K, the associated gearboxes show typical wear on the 3rd and 4th gear synchronisers, more pronounced on vehicles used in heavy urban conditions. The 1.6 dCi R9M is more recent and less susceptible, though its gearbox is less commonly available on an exchange basis. On the petrol engines, the 1.2 Turbo HR12DDT experienced gear-selection difficulties linked to wear of the selector cable on certain model years. The typical symptoms warranting a gearbox replacement remain common across all variants: stiff gear changes when cold, a bearing noise whilst moving, or a gear that will no longer engage.
