The C3 takes up to four different types of gearbox depending on the engine

5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, SensoDrive or BMP5: the choice depends on the engine, not the body style. On the C3, the same car size covers very different mechanical configurations between 2002 and today, which makes identifying the correct gearbox absolutely essential before placing any order.

Diesel: the 1.4 HDi accounts for the majority of variants

The 1.4 HDi is the most widely represented diesel engine in this catalogue, and also the most complex to identify: it can be paired with a 5-speed manual, a SensoDrive or a BMP5, depending on the engine code (8HX, 8HZ, 9HX, 9HZ, 9HP) and the transmission configuration. The 1.6 HDi and the 1.5 HDi are each fitted with a manual gearbox only — 5-speed for the former, 6-speed for the latter. The 1.5 BlueHDi 100 is exclusively paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The SensoDrive, found on the 1.4 HDi, is sold without its automated actuator: this is a key factor in determining compatibility with the original installation.

Petrol: SensoDrive on 1.4 and 1.6, manual on 1.2

On the petrol side, the 1.4 (codes KFV, NFU) and the 1.6 (codes TU5JP4, HMZ, HNZ, HNY) can be fitted with either a 5-speed manual or a SensoDrive automated gearbox — two mechanically similar but non-interchangeable units. The 1.2 PureTech takes a 6-speed manual, whilst the 1.2 naturally aspirated (code YH01 or YHX) is paired with a 5-speed manual. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference for distinguishing between these configurations — particularly across the different generations of C3, which share similar engines but do not always share the same gearboxes.
