8HX or 8HZ: two engine codes for the 1.4 HDi C3, and different gearboxes from 2002 to 2009

The engine code is the first thing to check before anything else. On the C3 1.4 HDi, two codes exist: the 8HZ and the 8HX. These two blocks share the same engine capacity but are not always fitted with the same gearbox. The code appears on the V5C registration document (section P.5) or directly on the engine; it is the code — not the year alone — that determines the compatible gearbox reference.

Manual, BMP5 or SensoDrive: three distinct families on this diesel

Over the 2002–2009 period, the 1.4 HDi was fitted with three types of transmission: a 5-speed manual, the BMP5 and the SensoDrive. The BMP5 and SensoDrive are two names for an automated manual gearbox with an electro-hydraulic actuator: they are sold without the robot unit or actuator, which is a separate component. The first registration date combined with the engine code remains the most reliable way to identify which of these three families is fitted to the vehicle, as all three variants coexisted across certain production years.
