Manual or SensoDrive: which gearbox suits the 1.4 KFV in the C3, depending on use and the condition of the original unit?

The 1.4 petrol engine in the C3 (2002–2010), engine code KFV, was paired with two very different transmissions: a 5-speed manual and the SensoDrive, an automated manual version of the same mechanical gearbox. These are two distinct families, each with their own references — including 20DP42, 20CQ18, 20CP58, 20CP56, 20CN40 and 20CN37 — and identification cannot be based on the first registration date alone.

SensoDrive: the gearbox supplied without its actuator

The SensoDrive is supplied without the actuator (electrohydraulic robot unit), in line with standard practice for automated manual gearboxes. This is something to factor in before ordering: the actuator is diagnosed and replaced separately. If the mechanical gearbox itself has failed, the automated unit is the relevant part; if only the actuator is at fault, it is not.

When rebuilding your own unit makes sense

Within this range, only the exchange option is available: the reconditioned unit is dispatched and the old unit is returned. Rebuilding the customer's own unit is not offered here. This may point towards other routes if the gearbox has a rare specification or a particular adaptation that would be difficult to match exactly on a replacement unit.
