C3 petrol or diesel, three generations: only the engine code distinguishes compatible units

The Citroën C3 spans more than twenty years of production (2002–2024) and six distinct engine variants, several of which share the same capacity without sharing the same block. The engine code stamped on the casing is therefore the only reliable way to determine which part is right for a specific vehicle.

Petrol: three engine families with very different architectures

The 1.0 PureTech (codes EB0F_ZMZ, ZM01, ZMZ) is a naturally aspirated three-cylinder, architecturally separate from the turbocharged PureTech units. The 1.2 PureTech covers five codes (EB2ADT_HNP, EB2DT_HNZ, EB2FA_HMR, EB2F_HMZ, HM01): this spread reflects successive production revisions that altered the timing chain — a well-known weak point on early versions. The 1.2 PureTech 130, identified solely by the code HNS EB2ADTS, is a higher-output variant that must not be confused with the standard 1.2 units despite sharing the same capacity. The 1.4 VTi (codes 8F01, 8FN, 8FP, 8FR, EP3C) belongs to an older naturally aspirated family, entirely unrelated to the PureTech range.

Diesel: two capacities, four codes each

The 1.6 HDi comes in four codes (9H02, 9HW, 9HX, BH01) depending on the generation and emissions specification. The 1.4 HDi likewise has four codes (8HR, 8HZ, F6JA, F6JB): codes F6JA and F6JB correspond to a distinct architecture from codes 8HR and 8HZ, and the blocks are not interchangeable between these two sub-families. Checking the code on the fitted engine is essential before placing any order, regardless of the capacity shown on the registration document.
