6 engine types, 40 engine codes: the failures that lead to engine replacement on the Citroën C4

On the Citroën C4 (2004–2024), two engine families account for the vast majority of engine replacements. The 1.6 HDi — available in no fewer than 19 different engine codes (DV6ATED4, DV6BTED4, DV6TED4/9HZ, DV6ETED, DV6DTED, DV6FC/BHZ, DV6FD/BHY…) — is well documented for oil circuit sludging at low urban speeds, with crankshaft scoring and bearing seizure recorded on first-generation diesel particulate filter (DPF) variants. The 2.0 HDi (14 codes, including DW10FD/AHX and the G6DA to G6DG series) is prone to cylinder head cracking and connecting rod failure on high-mileage examples or those with a history of poor oil level maintenance. Together, these two diesel units account for the overwhelming majority of reconditioned bare engine enquiries for this model.

On the petrol side: PureTech and THP — two distinct weaknesses

The 1.6 THP (EP6CDT/5FV) is well known for timing chain issues — premature wear of the chain and tensioner — which can lead to sudden catastrophic engine failure if left too long. The 1.2 PureTech (EB2DT/HNZ, EB2DTS/HNY, EB2F/HMZ), a more recent unit, shares the same timing chain architecture and displays similar symptoms: a metallic rattling noise on cold start, followed by engine failure if the chain is not replaced in time. The 1.4 VTi (EP3C/8FP) and the 1.6 VTi (UFBA, TXWA, 5FW, 8FS) are more robust and generate far fewer requests for complete engine replacement.

Identify your engine code precisely before placing any order

With 40 engine codes recorded for this model alone and a production span of 20 years, two vehicles sharing the same engine capacity and quoted power output may carry structurally different units — sumps, bottom-end assemblies and cylinder heads that are not interchangeable between generations. The engine code stamped on the block (and listed on the V5C equivalent under section P5) is the only reliable criterion for confirming compatibility with a reconditioned bare engine.
