40 engine codes on the C4 from 2004 to 2024: known failures vary as widely as the engines themselves

The Citroën C4 spans twenty years of production and six distinct engine families, both petrol and diesel. Across that range, faults are far from uniform: each engine family has its own weak points, and the symptoms that lead to replacement differ depending on engine capacity, fuel type and generation. Before identifying the right bare engine, you need to start with the right diagnosis.

Diesel: two families, two failure profiles

The 1.6 HDi accounts for 19 engine codes — DV6ATED4, DV6BTED4, DV6DTED, DV6ETED, 9HX, 9HW, 9HZ, BH01, and the T1, T3, NGDA and NGDB series among others. This variety reflects successive updates driven by emissions regulations. Well-documented issues include oil circuit sludging on early units (9HX, 9HZ), which can lead to seizure, as well as cylinder head failures under heavy thermal stress. The 2.0 HDi covers 14 codes (G6DA to G6DG, AHZ, DW10FD_AHX, QXBA, QXBB, RH02, TXWA, UFBA). On these engines, cylinder head gasket leaks and cracks caused by overheating are the most common reasons for engine removal.

Petrol: specific weaknesses for each engine

The 1.6 THP (EP6CDT_5FV) is well known for timing chain issues: premature stretching, cold-start rattles and tensioner wear. These symptoms frequently precede internal engine failure. The 1.2 PureTech (EB2DT_HNZ, EB2DTS_HNY, EB2F_HMZ) shares a similar timing chain weakness, reported from the very first years on sale. The 1.6 VTi (5FW) and the 1.4 VTi (8FS, EP3C_8FP) have more stable profiles overall, but remain prone to abnormal oil consumption on high-mileage vehicles. In every case, the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable means of identification to avoid any replacement error.
