Reconditioned Citroën C4 1.6 HDi Engine

On the C4's 1.6 HDi, power output determines the engine code — and the two are not interchangeable

Between 2004 and 2018, the C4 received the 1.6 HDi in several distinct states of tune: 90, 92, 110 and 115 hp among others. Each power output corresponds to a specific family of engine codes. DV6ATED4, DV6BTED4, DV6TED4 / 9HZ, DV6DTED, DV6ETED, DV6FC and DV6FD are not cosmetic variants of the same block: their cylinder heads, pistons and injection parameters differ. Fitting a DV6BTED4 in place of a DV6TED4 / 9HZ without checking the code stamped on the block is the most common source of error in the workshop.

Short codes and long codes: why confusion is so common

Some vehicles carry a short code of three or four characters — 9HX, 9HW, 9H02, BH01 — which corresponds to a national variant or an emissions-standard revision of the same DV6. Others display the long codes from the T series: T1DA, T1WA, T3DA, NGDA, etc. These long codes appear mainly on model years 2010–2018 and indicate the move to Euro 5 and Euro 6. The engine plate and manufacturer documentation remain the only reliable sources for cross-referencing short code, long code and year of manufacture.

Known weaknesses of the DV6 under heavy use

The DV6 is prone to diesel particulate filter clogging in short urban use, which accelerates oil dilution and weakens the crankshaft bearings. The high injection-pressure versions (110–115 hp) also show early wear on the valve seats in earlier model years. These failures typically lead to replacement of the bare engine rather than a partial repair, as the damage affects the bottom end.
